On the one hand, countries can control what products and how much of a product is imported into their country, on the other hand, countries then limit what products are available to their citizens and the cost of the items available to them (David, 2021). The reading mentions some items with tariff-rate quotas that seem somewhat arbitrary like olives and mandarins, which I would imagine would be for safety reasons, but on the other hand brooms and upland cotton are mentioned. One of the other products that the text mentioned that were given an interesting reason for non-tariff barriers was foreign automobile sales in South Korea. The government wanted its citizens to feel like purchasing foreign cars was unpatriotic (David, 2021). In a system where there is supposed to be a free market, barriers like this deteriorate the choices of the residents of that country. On the other hand, ensuring safety measures are in place for items that are consumed in your country is a good thing, but this should not be done through a practice like non-tariff barriers. Monitoring imports for quality is enough to ensure a greater number of countries can import their products and give developing countries a chance at improving their quality of life as well. This would also be important for keeping prices down on certain items where an imposed non-tariff barrier causes higher prices.
