Different Personality Types
Subject: The importance of educating society about the different
personality types of people.
Thesis statement: To have a better society, it is important to
educate people about the individual differences in characteristic
patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving.
Everyone has their own personality and does want a better one. Personality
refers to individual differences in characteristic patterns of thinking, feeling, and
behaving, according to American Psychological Association. Each one of us is unique; we
were all born with our own strengths and weaknesses. Florence Littauer explains in her
book, Personality Plus, how important it is to recognize our uniqueness to understand we
are all different from each other. There are several good reasons to study personality
types. One of the most important is that human beings are inherently interesting and
dangerous. People are everywhere, having all sorts of impacts on us – for better or worse.
Most of the time we navigate the shoals of interpersonal life without failing, but there
has no doubt been times when we suddenly became aware that we did not really know
the people we thought we knew. There may even have been times when we realized that
we did not know ourselves. We will explain further why it is important to educate
ourselves about the different personality types.
To understand people’s personality types, we need to understand personality
is both innate and acquired: from psychology terms, we know temperament and
character, respectively. In other words, both genetic and environmental factors
determine someone’s personality. You may be asking why is this important? Well,
because this is exactly what makes up a person: they inherited 50% from their parents
and 50% from their surroundings.
We said earlier that we are all unique; nevertheless, there are some characteristics that
cause many unique people to fall under a big personality type. Some psychologists
grouped them into categories. For example, Florence Littauer talked about them in her
book, Personality Plus, as Sanguine, Choleric, Melancholy and Phlegmatic, while Don
Richard with Russ Hudson represented them as the Enneagram, a group of 6. The purpose
is to unify a society to grow together. Imagine each one of us having our own personality
type to teach others about. This does not contradict our uniqueness. It simply defines that
we also share some traits.
In a deeper way, how can you recognize the different personality types? Starting with the
Sanguine, they are emotional and demonstrative. In a few words, we can say, they are
the lift of joy in times of trouble. You will realize sanguine always have a story to tell
because they are talkative. Popular sanguine also have an inherent desire to be the center
of attention, and, for this, Florence Littauer said in her book that their colorful stories
make them the life of the party.
Have you ever heard parents asking: why is my child so quiet? MA’AM, your child’s
temperament is simply different… Let us get into that. The Melancholy baby is thinking
deeply; he is quiet, undemanding, etc. The melancholies are thinkers. They are serious
about purpose, dedicated to order and organization, and appreciative of beauty and
intelligence. They are the perfectionist of the group. As Popular Sanguinis see their
weaknesses as trivial, and Perfect Melancholies see them as real and hopeless, Powerful
Choleric refuse to believe there is anything about them that could be offensive. Because
of their basic premise that they are always right, they naturally cannotsee that they could
be wrong. (Florence Littauer, 1992) They also can communicate with people, and know
everything will turn out all if they are in charge. Next and lastly, what about the peaceful
Phlegmatic? They are good listeners; they would rather listen than talk, as a group. They
are patient, well balanced, easy going with, etc…
When we can look at and understand one’s strengths and weaknesses, we can stop trying
to change the other person; otherwise, we will think everyone, not like us, is at least
slightly irregular.
Now that we have known a little more about ourselves and our personality
differentiation, what does it mean to us and our community? This first understanding
helps to gain respect for one another’s actions and feeling, to get a basic understanding
of how others run at work to actively engage members of the community through
different beneficial personality traits of team members, to use fellow team members’
personality traits to achieve goal (Tom Krieglstein, 2022). Indeed, personality is influenced
by social interactions; it affects behaviors and actions. Have you ever read this quote of
Lenin: “Show me who your friends are, and I’ll tell you who you are?” When we meet
other members of society, we buy certain qualities while we show certain others. They all
combine to form personality. In conclusion, personality is also a result of social
interaction.
To be a successful community, it is important to go back to the basics and remember that
a successful team often starts with different forms of communication, understanding, and
respect. And personality tests are a terrific way to do that!
Yes, personality is more than being an extravert or an introvert. Considering the
difference of temperament is extremely important in self-improvement. Usually, when
we meet people, we only see the first part of themselves; in other words, we limit our
human being power to see a person outside the clothes they wear. In this case, an
education on personality types helps to a better understanding of yourself and those
around you whom you work with, interact with, go to family gatherings with, date, marry,
anyone you have a social interaction with. On the basic level, knowing your personality
type can help you answer the personal “why” question. Why do you feel comfortable
planning out your vacation while your bestie feels anxious planning out their trip and
would rather have no schedule at all? Because you might be a Melancholy, while your
bestie might be a Sanguine (it is recommended to do the profile test to avoid result
selection bias). Further way, MBTI Marketing Manager explained in their article, 6
Reasons Why Knowing Your Personality Type Can Change Your Life, how by understanding
your personality, you also understand what your personality is not, and can start to see
differences in those around you in a deeper way. Other positive reasons are knowing your
preferences, avoiding conflict, appreciating adversity, etc…
Each one of usis unique so we can function in our own role. Whether you are melancholy,
phlegmatic, choleric, or sanguine, be grateful that you were blessed with it. It is what
separates us from one another. We are not alike for a specific purpose. If we were all the
same, the world would be a boring place. It is primordial that we start embracing our
uniqueness and seeing others as they are; sharing with our circle what we have learned
so we can have a better society. Because we are society, let us become better, positive
human beings.
