Definition and Classification: Profile Essay Assigmment Sheet
Choose one of the following prompts as your guide for developing a topic for the profile essay. Be sure to integrate not
just definition or classification, but a combination of BOTH techniques. You may even bring some of the methods of
process writing also discussed in Chapter 9. Do not slip into the tone of how-to, though.

Write about a role that you play in your life. It may be the role of a student, friend, son or daughter, mother or
father, husband, wife, team mate, etc. It may be a work role, such as restaurant server, bank teller, or paramedic.
Your definition and classification will be a subjective one because you will infuse into it your enjoyment of
dislike of the role and your atutudes toward il.
Write on an activity that you enjoy, such as fishing, dance, aerobics, reading, or shopping. These are just
suggestions. Consult me on other choices you may come up with!
Write an essay giving your definition of a hero. Prewrite a list of the characteristics of a hero. Use these as a basis
for your three body paragraphs. Then, make a list of people who possess these characteristics. These may be
actual people (your sister: Dr. Martin Luther King, r., etc.] or general categories (caregivers; firefighters; etc.)
The people will serve as your examples in your body paragraphs. Your thesis should list the characteristics of a
hero, and your paragraphs will Illustrate those characteristics with specifc examples.
Discuss the kinds of problems that can ruin a relationship. It is up to you to decide what the relationship is – it
may be a romance, a friendship, a marriage, a student-teacher relationship, a relationship with a coworker, or a
relationship with a neighbor
