Module Content

Definition of research, the dos and don’ts of a research project, identification of project area, defining a research aim and objectives, collection, collation and analysis of secondary and primary data, critical appraisal of literature and primary findings, and the presentation of an academic dissertation.

Module Aims

·         To identify, plan, and undertake a research programme within a specific discipline or subject area.

Module Learning Outcomes

LO1. conceptualise and formulate, on the basis of an adequate reading and discussion of appropriate literature, the aim and objectives of a built environment problem worthy of investigation;

LO2. plan, organise and execute, with full regards for ethical issues, safety and risk assessment, an independent investigation of the identified built environment problem in LO1 using appropriate quantitative and/or qualitative research methods;

LO3. critically evaluate the results of the investigation in LO2 in relation to the extant literature, including context of any competing perspectives or debates, and draw appropriate conclusions and/or recommendations;

LO4. Identify any shortcomings in relation to the established aim and objectives and recognise potential for further research;

LO5. present the research project in the form of a written dissertation that is coherent, persuasive and readily understandable manner.
