The topic I plan to focus on for my capstone project is the effect of parental involvement on student achievements. Parents have such a huge impact in all aspects of their children’s’ lives and it is important for both, children and parents, to realize this. The objective of my research is to determine how much of an effect parental guidance has regarding a students academics and achievements. I have chosen to focus on this topic because it is vital for parents and the student to understand what effect parental involvement can have on a students achievements and how to make changes to improve a students achievements.

My research question would be: What role does parental involvement play in students academic achievements?

The target audience in this case would be teachers, parents, academic institutions and researchers. The stakeholders will be the public, specifically the parents of students as well as the students themselves. These stakeholders will prove to us whether or not parental involvement does effect student achievements and success. Lam & Ducreux’s (2013) focus on the affect of parental involvement on middle school students and we are able to see that parental influence does have an effect on academic achievement. We see that this affected middle school students’ academic achievement, transition rates, career choice, and socialization. As I have done my research, I have found a great number of research that provides information on this topic and I look forward to expand on this topic.

Start thinking about how you would narrow this further to location, age group, and definitions of academic success. Academic success doesn’t always mean good grades. Right? So, let’s keep working on this and try to narrow. We begin with a wide net and narrow things down in the first couple of weeks.
