Project 1: -Culture: Dialogues &Sharing on Culture and Cross-Cultural Awareness
Course SLO: Examine the impact of social and cultural factors on self, and individual/group
R.Q.: What can our cultures teach us about our self and others? How could our
cultures shape our perception of ourselves and of others?
Step 1: Define and understand cultural terms such as “ethnocentrism, folkways,mores…and
other concepts.” Define all listed cultural concepts first, then find examples for 16/20 term.
Step 2: Search for examples of the above concepts (terms) by Interacting with family members
–immediate and extended family. The examples should be from your Cultural Heritage (where
your parents or grandparents are from. If your ancestors are from the US, that is your focus).
Step 3: Dialogue and interact with one peerregarding their own Cultural Heritage to both
understand your own culture and obtain a cross-cultural perspective. Their Heritage needs to
be different from your own cultural heritage (8 concepts & examples for you and 8 for them).
Step 4: Collectively agree on 16/20 (80%) concepts you discussed with your peer, and assemble
a power point presentation of your findings & major take away from the process.
Step 5: Write a Reflection on the following pointers(1-page double space):
a) What was going on in with you and your peer(s) when you engage in the definition of
concepts, the search for relevant examples, and dialogue with your peer(s) and/or family on
your cultural heritage? Was this done in a context of equity (not equality) or of Cultural wealth?
b) Were you able to recognize your own assumption(s) or bias(es) of other people (family) or
peer(s) who engaged with you for this project and interpreted things or concepts differently
from you?
c) Was there anything you notice or observed in your discussions that included dynamics of
power or history that could influence equity (not equality) or cultural wealth?
d) Was there anything that indicated to you that either equity or cultural wealth was present or
not present while you worked on this project? How so? Explain.
Step 6: Write a Reflection on the following pointers (1-page double space):
a) What Awareness did you gain about your own Cultural Heritage?
b) What Awareness did you gain about your peer(s) Cultural Heritage?
c) What can you do to make others aware of your own Culture and your Peer(s) Cultural
Heritage?
