America Dancing Mid-term Paper Due- In Moving History Dancing Cultures (write-your midterm)
Please reflect upon the ways in which dance in political and also serves in the politics of representation. How has dance in the US, India, and Africa been shaped historically? How do different types of dance work engage in ideas of “dance as a weapon”? Please reflect upon ways that artists have engaged dance historically to support their own identities, politics, and voices.

Hadasssah Segal’s performance of Anna Sokolow’s Kaddish comes from Segal’s longer program “Deep Roots, Exotic Flowers: Dances by Jewish Women Choreographers.” Segal highlights modern dance works by three internationally acclaimed Jewish women choreographers: Sokolow, Ze’eva Cohen, and Margalit Oved. Believing strongly that dance could be more than mere entertainment, she explored the most pressing issues of her day—from the Great Depression, to the Holocaust, to the alienated youth of the 1960s—and challenged her audiences to think deeply about themselves and their society.
