Data Analytics

Textbook:  Data Mining for Business Analytics: Concepts Techniques and Applications with JMP PRO, 1st
Edition (2017) by Shmueli, Bruce, Stephens, and Patel, ISBN: 978-1-118-87743-2.

PART ONE
Instructions:
Complete Exercise 2.11 on page 45 and page 48 using JMP Pro.
Minor Update: For part b of Exercise 2.11 on page 48, the original instructions from the textbook stated that “…using the JMP Pro Make Validation Column utility (from the Cols menu).” However, since the textbook’s original instructions were based on an old version of the JMP Pro software, and since you may be using an updated version of JMP Pro software, you may find the “Make Validation Column” under the “Analyze>Predictive Modeling menu.”
Note: To complete Exercise 2.11, students need to use the Toyotacorolla.jmp dataset ONLY. For some reason (e.g., formatting or page design), Tables 2.5, 2.6, and 2.7 were placed close to Exercise 2.11 in the textbook. However, Tables 2.5, 2.6, and 2.7 are related to other exercises in this chapter.
Please use appropriate screenshots and reports from JMP.
Submit your Word file responding to each question. Make sure to include relevant screenshots/reports from JMP.
Note: Depending on which JMP Pro software version you use, there may be some minor updates, compared with the original instructions from the textbook. The reason is that the textbook’s original instructions were based on an old version of the JMP Pro software. Overall, such minor updates should not affect your understanding. If they do, please let your professor know, and your professor will add an updated note here promptly.

PART TWO
Instructions:
Please use the revised instructions and dataset below to complete this assignment. The revised instructions below are essentially the same as those of problem 3.4 on page 80 at the end of Chapter 3; however, I have provided additional suggestions and hints to help you complete it effectively. Hope this helps. If you have any questions, please email me.

Laptop Sales at a London Computer Chain: Interactive Visualization. ENBIS (the European Network for Business and Industrial Statistics) provided these data as part of a contest organized in the fall of 2009.
Scenario: Imagine that you are a new analyst for a company called Acell (a company selling laptops). You have been provided with data about products and sales. You need to help the company with their business goal of planning a product strategy and pricing policies that will maximize Acell’s projected revenues in 2009.
Use the dataset of “LaptopSalesJanuary2008.jmp” and answer the following questions.
NOTE: There are many ways of visualizing these data. We provide some suggestions/examples below, which are by no means the only correct solution. In general, it is important to properly format and annotate the visualizations.

A: Price Questions:
At what price are the laptops actually selling in terms of median, mean, and range?
Does price change with time? (Hint: Make sure that the date column is recognized as such. JMP will then allow dynamic transformations and allow you to plot the data by weekly or monthly aggregates, or even by day of week.)
Are prices consistent over retail outlets? (Suggestions: Retail Price vs. Store Postcode; mean, Box Plot, line, etc.)
How does price change with configuration in general (i.e., Retail Price vs. Configuration)? How does price change with a specific configuration factor such as RAM and battery life?

B: Location Questions [Note: Part B about location questions will NOT be required anymore due to complexity and difficulty for most students at this time.]

C: Revenue Questions:
How do the sales volume in each store relate to Acell’s revenues?
How does this depend on the configuration?

D: Configuration Questions:
What are the details of each configuration (e.g., screen size, battery life, RAM, etc.)? How does this relate to price?
Do all stores sell all configurations?

Submit one Word file here. Use appropriate charts from JMP to answer each question.
There is no specific format for your submission. But your submission needs to have the following components:
Your name and ID.
Response to each question.
Appropriate JMP graphs and reference to these graphs in your response (using screenshot will be acceptable).
Clear explanation, based on the JMP output.
Note: Depending on which JMP Pro software version you use, there may be some minor updates compared with the original instructions from the textbook. The reason is that the textbook’s original instructions were based on an old version of the JMP Pro software. Overall, such minor updates should not affect your understanding. If they do, please let your professor know, and your professor will promptly add an updated note here.
