A historical public health nurse who made a significant contribution to the field of public health is Lillian Wald. Lillian Wald is one of the nurses that was instrumental in the Henry Street Settlement development. In 1893, The Henry Street Settlement served the health of people that lived in New York City’s lower east side where “impoverished immigrants” received care (Trugio-Londrigan and Lewesnon, 2018, p.543). This was a big step away from traditionally nursing which treated an illness or injury. The Henry Street Settlement instead focused on general health disease prevention. Anderson (2018) discusses that Lillian Wald taught residents about “health and hygiene”.
Lillian Wald is also credited with being one of the first nurses to focus on providing culturally competent care which is discussed by Trugio-Londrigan and Lewesnon, (2018). This is an extremely important consideration when providing nursing care to patients. Culturally competent care will have better outcomes as patients are more likely to comply with care that is sensitive to their needs and wants. Lillian Wald also compared the difference in quality and safety between the care patients received and home and that at hospitals which facilitated record keeping and statistical tracking for public health purposes (Trugio-Londrigan and Lewesnon, 2018).
Additionally, Trugio-Londrigan and Lewesnon, (2018) acknowledge Lillian Wald as one of nurses that helped coin the term “public health nurses” and with other leaders founded the National Organization for Public Health Nursing (NOPHN). The NOPHN was very important in helping to regulate and standardize the care and focus of public health nursing as discussed by Trugio-Londrigan and Lewesnon, (2018). For all the reasons previously, discussed Lillian Wald played a very crucial role in public health nursing.
