General Instructions
This paper does not have a length requirement; however, points will be deducted if any
of the information is missing. Therefore, be sure you double and triple check your paper
to ensure every question/bullet point has been included in your paper.
This paper should be in APA format (7th edition). That means you should have a cover
page and reference page. No abstract is required. All information that is not considered
general knowledge should be properly cited. If you are unsure what qualifies as general
knowledge the Purdue Owl APA Formatting and Style Guide is an excellent resource for
answering format citation questions.
Choose one of the scenarios found in Chapter 4 of your textbook. The scenarios are
found on the following pages:

Use your selected scenario to answer the following questions:
I. Introduction to the client and the working environment
Include in your discussion:
• A brief summary of the client and the presenting problems to be addressed in
therapy.
• The mental health service delivery modality (inpatient, outpatient, partial
hospitalization, aftercare) and whether the services are being offered through
community mental health (public) or private facilities.
• How is the office is set up; room decor (warm colors, only lamps with no
overhead lighting), furniture arrangement (how is the room set up to ensure
counselor safety), and what efforts have been made in the overall environment
that helps to create a comfortable and welcoming environment?
II. How will the counselor address the initial sessions of The
Counseling Process?

• How do you plan to gather information (electronic forms you fill out during the
session, paper forms you fill out electronic or paper forms the client fills out
before the session)?
• How do you plan to provide structure in the initial sessions (you MUST create
your own version of Informed Consent and include a copy with your paper)?
• What questions you plan to include in your intake interview?
• How will you develop rapport?
• How will you secure client records?
III. How will you address Professional Development?
Include in your discussion:
• Based on the type of treatment you are providing and the population of the client,
which type of professional organizations should you be affiliated with and why?
• Discuss the specific type of conferences or continuing education you plan to
attend in order to remain current on the latest evidence-based practices
associated with the type of treatment you are providing for this client.
IV. Termination of Counseling
Include in your discussion:
• Describe the process you will use to terminate counseling with a client. You must
address timing and facilitating.
• Which form of follow-up do you plan to use and why is that the best choice for the
client in the scenario you picked?
