spiral into a bitterness that we can’t shake. In the excerpt from the 1852 novel by
Nathaniel Hawthrone, the author displays the narrator’s attitude towards Zenobia as
gorgeous and powerful to “self-possessed” and becomes apprehensive, through the use
of the literacy devices of first-person point of view and dialogue.
In the beginning, the narrator shows a lot of admiration towards Zenobia, as she
is a “powerful” figure on the farm. The narrator is so bewitched by her as if she is an
“illusion”. Zenobia is the opposite of other women who were considered “poor, thin, and
weakly”. Through the narrator’s description, Zenobia is hiding her true characters if
there was a spell on her. After the dialogue between the two characters, Zenobia is
exposed to be “proud and self-possessed”. Suddenly her other characteristics are gone
and she is left in her truest form.
