Crisis intervention is required for a variety of reasons in the school setting. Members of crisis response teams in schools take on different roles, such as the crisis coordinator who oversees the whole situation, versus the counseling liaison, who oversees only the needed counseling services. This assignment focuses on one of the possible reasons a crisis intervention may be needed: tragedies that result in the deaths of students.
In these crisis response situations, you would be working with a team of responders who need to understand each other. It’s important to use clear communication when developing the most appropriate plan.
Design a crisis response plan for 1 of the following scenarios, as if the incident took place on a Friday evening and no other details are known at the time that a response is needed from the crisis team:
Scenario 1: Four teens are killed in a car accident
Scenario 2: A fellow student has committed suicide
Scenario 3: A student and their family are killed in a fire at their home
Scenario 4: Several students from a nearby school are killed in a campus shooting after a school event
Provide a 50- to 75-word response for each of the following questions (350‑525 total words):
What should the crisis coordinator do right away?
What issues should be addressed with the closest friends of the victims, and how should they be addressed?
What should the counseling liaison’s primary responsibilities be in the immediate aftermath of the tragic event?
What other agencies might the crisis team request assistance from?
With class not in session at the time, other students hear of this tragedy due to the accident occurring on a Friday night. What are your biggest concerns about making sure that all students are provided counseling or other support?
What kinds of memorials, both immediate and permanent, might be appropriate, if any?
What school-based prevention practices might come out of this event?
