As far as I can remember, I have always been a shy child. As a teenager, I disliked large crowds. Closer for me was a romantic time alone with myself. A heart-to-heart conversation between two friends could improve my condition. The explanation I can give for my preference for this is simple – I am a person who is more introvert than extrovert is. Besides, quite shy, just a super set. After I began to realize the nature of myself, I began to delve deeper into the study of the processes occurring in the brain. Moreover, something began to happen that, in principle, everyone would expect. I realized that I do not understand anything about this topic. Albert Einstein’s words fit perfectly into my situation. “The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don’t know.”
I became part of an online project in America to study cells affected by Huntington’s disease [SCIENCE SCRIBBLER project]. I learned only basic skills on differentiating two cells but now I ‘m pretty sure that I want to continue study affected cells in a laboratory to find a cure or just a medicine to ease Huntington’s disease’s consequences. Number of people with Huntington’s disease who do not have an ability to live their live as usual worried me. Another insight that came to my mind is that our brain’s diseases have wide-ranges of symptoms and not for all of them cure is found. Moreover, in most cases it is very difficult to recognize disease in its early stage.
After reading some researches in brain science, it became obvious for me that our productivity, mental and physical health and communication with other people depend on the state of our mind. While, sleeping and eating affect brain’s work. Therefore, I got the idea that correct lifestyle provides normal brain’s work, which is main criterion in calm living. In addition, working/studying goes much easier for person. Among others, I found the research of Carol Dweck on ego depletion and impact of belief in depletion full of interesting statistics. I understood that the power of human’s belief in something is even stronger than physical processes. Probably that is how I won 3rd place on swimming competition – belief.
To study processes, to develop efficient work of every part of the brain, to figure the reason out why brain works the way it works – that what for me is being a neuroscientist. American universities in most cases give a chance to study neuroscience while in my country this field is not developed yet. Going back to myself. Even if I will read all researches on nature of introvert, still there will be questions that I can answer only after making new research. Now I understand that shy introvert is not what I am because I am shy introvert who likes stupid jokes. I am talkative good listener and strict sister and leader. I am good at math but I am not good IT specialist. I am different in different situations and I am ready to study myself.
