“Kevin is a 15-year-old inner-city gang member. The gang is involved in drug dealing, which, of course, is illegal… Kevin’s father is no longer involved with Kevin’s family. Now only Kevin, his mother, and his three younger brothers remain. Kevin’s mother works a 6-day-per-week, 9-hour-per-day second-shift job at Boogie’s Burger Bungalow, a local all-night diner where she slings burgers. Although she loves her children dearly, she can barely make ends meet. She has little time for their supervision, especially Kevin’s as he is the oldest. All of the neighborhood kids seem to belong to one gang or another. This gives them a sense of identity and importance and provides social support. In many instances, such support is almost completely lacking elsewhere. Easy access to drugs offers a readily available chance to escape from impoverished, depressing, and apparently hopeless conditions. Finally, gang membership gives these young people a source of income. In fact, they can get relatively large amounts of money in a hurry…Finishing high school is considered quite a feat. Neighborhood unemployment runs at more than 50 percent”
