Instagram Takeover (3 * 15% = 45%)
Beginning with Week 2 of the course, students will select three (3) different weeks of the
course and create an Instagram post for each week relating to the week’s topic/theme. All
Instagram Takeover assignments must be completed between Week 2 and Week 11 of the course.
Some posts will be posted by the instructor to the course Instagram page (@genderandfashion).

Each post must include at least one image and a brief analysis of the image’s relevance to the
week’s topics/themes and how we can understand the gendered politics of the fashion within the
image selected. Students are not permitted to select images from the readings or lectures. This is
your opportunity to explore the themes of the week more broadly.
Each post should contain at least one image and include 250-300 words of analysis
examining the gendered politics of the fashion image. Hashtags are encouraged but will not be
counted towards the word count of the analysis. Students should also provide a brief (1-2
sentences) explanation to provide the (historical) context of the image. The range of images/videos
that can be used is extremely broad. Students may select specific fashion images, memes,
photoshoots, advertisements, screen shots, etc. The sole requirement for the selection of content is
that the content be connected to the theme(s) of the given week. While outside research is not
required, it is recommended to strengthen your analysis and contextualization. When drawing upon
ideas from the course texts and/or outside resources, be sure to cite these in your analysis.
Citation Formatting
• MLA will be the selected citation style. You will provide the author’s last name followed
by the page number (when available). For example: (Smith 10).
• Multiple texts by the same author, indicate the year the text was published. (Guenther 2004,
91) or (Cole 2013, 150)
• Readings where authors have the same last name, please use their initials. Week 4 (Miller,
M. 180) or (Miller, J.R. 245)
• When citing lectures, students must be specific. Students have been provided lecture
transcripts and must therefore use the transcript as their reference for page numbers.
Students only need to write the title of the lecture and the page number of the transcript
(when available). For example: (“Dressing Aryan Women”, 4) or (“Activists and Fashion
in the Fight Against AIDS”, 6).
• If you are citing the same lecture multiple times, you may shorten the title, but it still must
be clear which lesson you are citing. For example: (“Activists and Fashion”, 6) or (“Civil
Rights Movement”, 3) or (“Colonial Propaganda”, 5).
• Citations such as (Lecture 4)/(Week 5)/etc. will not be accepted and grades will be deducted
for improper citations.
• When citing a guest lecture and a transcript is not available, be sure to cite the guest
lecturer: (Olson), (Taylor Lecture), (Hochman-Ruiz Lecture), (Niittynen). Include

“Lecture” in your citation for lecturers where we are also reading one of their publications.
If a transcript is available, include the page number of the transcript.
Analysis
The analysis of the content should answer the following:
• What does the content tell us about gender and fashion?
• What is the (historical) context of the content?
• How is the content connected to the week’s theme(s)?
• Does your analysis include concepts and ideas from the course?
Please note that content is to be related to the theme of the week and not limited to the same
topics discussed in that week. For instance, students selecting Week 7 – Religious Fashion are not
required to analyze only the articles of clothing (i.e., the veil and yarmulke) discussed in the
readings and lecture. Use this as an opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding
of the course concepts and apply them to other examples and analyses of fashion from around the
world and throughout history. This is an opportunity to examine other areas of fashion that are not
discussed in lecture and the readings J.
Students are not permitted to complete Forum Posts, Online Check Ins, and Instagram
Takeover posts for the same week. Different weeks of the course must be chosen.
Submitting the Final Assignment
Please follow the submission guidelines carefully:
• Students must submit a Word document. PDFs and Pages will not be accepted.
o If you have a Mac and are using Pages, simply click File à Export to
à Word and save your file under the required file name (see below).
• Top of page include: your name, student number, course code, instructor’s
name, and the date of submission
• Use MLA style for your citations
• Present the content and the written analysis as if it were an Instagram post with
the image above followed by the written text.
• Written analysis may be single-spaced
• Use 12-point Times New Roman font.
• Final submissions are to be saved and submitted with the file name:
Last name, First Name_Insta #1 (or 2 or 3 depending on which post you are
submitting). For example: Evoy, Jacob_Insta #3.
Grades will be deducted for not properly following instructions.

Due Dates for Instagram Takeover
While students can choose which weeks they complete the Instagram Takeover posts, there
are deadlines for when students must submit by. Students are welcome to submit Posts #2 and #3
prior to the deadlines listed below. The deadlines below indicate when students must have their
first, second, and thirds posts submitted at the absolute latest.
