Question: What are the strengths and limitations of using biological treatments for substance abuse and dependence?

Kate Struthers – Tuesday, November 23, 2021, 1:54 PM
Some of the strengths of using biological treatments such as an antagonistic treatment is because it makes substances like alcohol so unpleasant through learned behavior it makes someone associate alcohol with feeling sick, and it takes the pleasure away of that substance which can help through learned behavior to not drink. As for an agonist treatment the strengths of using this treatment is it can relieve intense withdrawals and cravings which help people have a higher chance of not relapsing and being able to focus on therapy if that’s what they are doing. Some of the limitations however using these treatments is not treating the root of the problem with their addictions and because it helps relieve intense withdrawals it can be used as a crutch and still being dependent on a substance.

Question: Do you think that people’s attitudes toward sexual behaviors are affected by whether they are male or female? Do you think this influences how they judge others’ sexual behaviors? Why or why not?

Heather Coles – Tuesday, November 23, 2021, 3:05 PM
I do think that people’s attitudes toward sexual behaviors are affected by whether they are male or female. Studies have shown that men have more partners, frequent thoughts of sex, and more permissive sexual attitudes. Women have more sexual compliance and more frequent sexual victimization. I also think that due to this men and women judge others’ sexual behaviors. Men are happy to think that women who lean more toward the promiscuous side are more fun. Women tend to be more reserved on the whole. There are also double standards that each sex has to deal with. This standard would be that men who endorse the standard will have more sexual partners and women will have fewer partners. Granted there are complete opposites of both men and women who think and act this way.

Question:

When you think of young adults today, what do you think the greatest challenge is for this group? How do you think we should help them?
RESPOND TO THIS PERSON
Anthony McEachern – Monday, November 22, 2021, 7:56 AM
Hello,

When I think of young adults today and their greatest challenges I feel as though accountability is their greatest challenge. I am not sure why this seems to be the case but I have a few ideas that could plausibly increase the likelihood that a young adult could avoid accountability. Firstly, the employees of the public education system has been stripped of a considerable amount of authority when managing classrooms and schools. I became aware of this when a high school teacher told me the words “willful disobedience”, this essentially gives students the right to do as they please and leave the instructor with limited options to correct the student. These formative years are valuable for youth to accumulate corrective actions from caring adults, in an effort to shape their social behaviors. It is far too common for adolescents to have an insufficient amount of caring adults to help shepherd them into socially appropriate behavior habits, therefor leaving them to their own devices ( drugs, mischief, social media). This said, a lot of what is experienced in the life of current day adolescence is isolation, and a large helping of anonymity when engaging with social media. It has been found that an increase of negative thoughts and actions occur while interacting with social media, so repetitive interactions will form habits. The mix of unchecked disobedience at school, and digital anonymity seem to be a healthy mix to evade accountability for actions.

I read a sign on the wall at work years ago that said, “Watch your thoughts, they become you words; watch your words they become your actions; watch your actions, they become your habits; watch your habits they become your character; watch your character, it becomes your destiny.”- Lao Tzu

I added this quote because it shows a path that kids take to become the source of their problems. Kids need adults that care about them and are able to teach them an appropriate way to manage their thoughts that may otherwise lead them astray.

Question:

Consider a 30-year-old client who still lives at home, where his mother cooks his meals and does his laundry.
What would be your immediate reaction to this client?
How important is timing of completing developmental tasks in early adult development?
How do you think a therapist or counselor should work with this person?
How do you think you can hold yourself back from possibly passing judgement on this person?

I do not know if I would have an immediate reaction to this client without finding out more. There is a myriad of reasons that someone could be 30 living with his mother who cooks and cleans. I try to not jump to conclusions and I find that this might help. I have a friend right now that moved back to our how home town who lives with his parents. His parents do everything because he suffers from PTSD. My niece lives with her parents with her kids because she went to college for something new after a divorce and not having any skills. However based on the reasoning there could be a cause for concern.
The timing for completing developmental task in early adulthood is very important. A therapist can work with this person depending on why they are still at home but starting with goal setting after finding out why they are there. I know that I won’t pass judgment because I once a heard a homeless person say something that stuck with me that I truly believe. “Some of us are just one decision away from living in out car”. meaning that we never know whats going to happen.
