Individual Paper
In your group presentation and in your individual paper, you should address both the philanthropic and the nonprofit aspects of the chosen area of engagement. In conducting your research, there are sources we recommend you start with:
Giving USA (Links to an external site.): Provides both statistics as well as a written commentary on giving in each of these sectors. See the 2021 report. Download 2021 report.
Zinsmeister, K. (2016), An Almanac of American Philanthropy Links to an external site.provides a historical interpretation of the development of philanthropy in many of these fields.
Urban Institute Nonprofit and Philanthropy research area (Links to an external site.) In addition to these resources, you will work with your group to find additional resources specific to the chosen area of nonprofit engagement. You will need to cite any utilized materials in your research paper. Watch an overview of how to use the library’s databases (Links to an external site.) with our librarian, Kae Bara Kratcha.
Your paper will be a more in-depth analysis of the area（Health and Medicine) of engagement than is presented in the presentation. You may decide to focus on a smaller group of nonprofits within your area of engagement. you can choose a specific sub-sector of Health and Medicine, you can find the subsection of your area in National Center for Charitable Statistics.
Your paper should address the full range of questions presented above and any other issues you choose, presenting an understanding of the development of the area over the last two or more decades and clearly indicating the current status of that area of nonprofit engagement within society.
You may use the same sources as other members of your group but each paper needs to be written individually. The writing for each paper should be done on an individual basis even if the conclusions are similar.
Overview
What is the size and scope of the nonprofit organizations that function in this area of engagement? How many, how large, etc.
What specific issues and challenges do nonprofit organizations in this subsector face?
In what types of policy and advocacy do these organizations engage?
Funding
Which individuals or philanthropic groups donate for what types of causes within that area of engagement?
Has there been a trend in giving over the last two or three decades?
How important is philanthropy to nonprofit organizations operating in that space?
On which other funding sources do nonprofits in this area of engagement rely upon?
Challenges and Responses
What specific issues and challenges do these nonprofit organizations face?
Have nonprofit organizations innovated or evolved to create efficiencies or greater impact?
What partnerships does this area of engagement have with either/both the private or government sectors?
Are there ethical dilemmas specific to this area of nonprofit engagement?
Do management and boards in this area of engagement appear to reflect the demographics of the intended beneficiaries?
Paper Format:
Please refer to the syllabus on course and school policies for instructions on “Citation & Submission”. In addition, the text of the paper should be 7-8 pages, double-spaced, and formatted in Times New Roman 12-point font with page numbering. Please use APA style to cite your sources, but remember to always include specific page numbers whenever you cite a source. Lastly, please include in the upper right-hand header, single-spaced and in 9-point font, your name, the class, and the date.
