Watch “The Myth of the Average Learner,” a TEDTalk by Todd Rose, Stopping at 14:51.

As you watch, consider the following questions in your journal or note-taking document for the course:

What type of learner is well served when we plan to the middle of the group?
How might you develop or revise your instructional approach to better accommodate learner differences?

Step 2 in 200 words :
Respond to at least 1 of your peers’ posts. Look out for responses that deepen your understanding of how learner differences impact student experiences in a class designed for the mythical average.

peer response is the following :

Student A response :

I really enjoyed this TED talk. It speaks of the importance of nurturing at least ONE individual potential. “Isn’t that what it’s about,” Todd Rose says.

Teaching towards the “average” had a huge impact on me as a kid. I went to elementary school not knowing one word of English. So of course any subject for me was difficult to understand. I was placed in ESL classes to bring me up to speed. I was never able to focus when it came to reading. I hated ELA or even history because I noticed it took me forever to get through a text. Teaching at a grade level made me intimidated and caused me to fail in these subjects. My way of learning has always been visual. I would watch videos instead of reading, and I grasped the content much better this way. I would even listen to audible books, instead. It made me learn English much better and learn the sounds to words as they should be pronounced. As I grew up, I learned my own learning habits and continued to learn in these ways. Hence, Math was my favorite subject because there was minimal reading involved and my mind and pencil would always be moving. I loved it the most and my grades were always the best in Math compared to any other subject.
