Tableau Exercise 1
I assumed you signed up with tableau and downloaded the tableau desktop. This is a simple hands-on exercise to familiarize you with the basics of Tableau. You will answer 3 business questions using three different types of data visualization.
First things first – SET UP
⦁ Open Tableau
⦁ Connect to sample super store excel spreadsheet
⦁ Drag Orders to the top right box (This represents your source data)(if you get a message edit relationships, cancel)
⦁ Select Sheet 1 on the bottom left
QUERY #1
⦁ You seem to be losing money on some products, find all the product that you make a negative profit on
⦁ To do this
⦁ Drag Product Name to the row area or double click Product Name from tables on the left
⦁ Drag or double click profit to the measures area
⦁ You spread sheet should now look like this (but much longer):
⦁ How do you determine which products you are losing money on i.e. profits <0? To achieve this we must apply a filter on the results.
Drag Product Name into the filter box alternatively you can use the drop arrow next to the product name in the row choose Filter from menu

By field
Profit Sum < 0
Apply

⦁ rename this worksheet from Sheet 1 to profit loss products (this is on the bottom of your screen)
QUERY #2
⦁ open a new worksheet (click on worksheet in the menu bar and select new worksheet)
⦁ Find what product is given the highest and the lowest discount – tell me the customer segment and the product
⦁ To do this
⦁ Drag category and sub-category to the row area
⦁ Drag customer segment to the columns area
⦁ Drag discount to the measures area
⦁ You spread sheet should now look like this:
⦁ go to the show me menu
⦁ Notice that some of the chart styles are in color (these are the ones that are most likely to let you visualize your data best)
⦁ Try all of the various charts – which one is best for you
⦁ Notice our highest discount goes for Binders for consumer customer segments and our lowest goes for copiers
⦁ rename this worksheet from Sheet 2 to discount by segment QUERY #3
⦁ open a new worksheet (click on worksheet in the menu bar and select new worksheet), or go to the bottom of your screen and select on the tab next to discounts by segment
⦁ You plan to have a knowledge exchange meeting. To determine who to invite to the meeting you want to know which states in each of the 4 regions are doing the best and the worst .
⦁ To do this
⦁ Drag state to the columns area
⦁ Drag region to the rows area
⦁ Drag profit to the measures area
⦁ You spread sheet should now look like this:
⦁ Go to the show me menu
⦁ Select the filled map chart
⦁ Notice the low performing states are in red (or yellow) and the high performing states are in dark green (or blue). rename this worksheet from Sheet 3 to profitability by state
10) now look at it by various categories of product (to do this you need to select the top left graphic on show me
11) then select category and drag it into columns. Now filter on Technology.
