Textual Analysis Essay
The final project for this course is an argumentative essay (12-point type, double spaced) that expands the textual analysis essay that you have already completed.
To expand it, I suggest that, first, you continue to research it, doing traditional library and database research (books, journals and other periodicals that include articles related to your topic) as well as internet research. For some of you, expanding the paper may mostly involve turning the theoretical framework into a more full-fledged literature review that includes other items related to your topic. As you do the research, keep in mind that you’ll need to properly cite your sources in the essay and include a stylistically correct reference page. Ultimately, I’ll expect you to cite between twelve and 20 sources. For some of you, expanding the paper may involve developing the connotative reading and citing appropriate support for your argument.
Again, the basic structure of the paper is that of a typical essay:
— First, introduce the topic in some inventive way that draws in your reader. You should state a thesis somewhere in the introduction — probably near the end. I always recommend a statement like: “The purpose of this paper is to….”
— Provide a literature review, including a theoretical framework and a review of what else has been written on this topic. This is where you’ll use a lot of your research. Be sure to cite it correctly. Please use APA style.
— Argue your case. Use specific examples as you attempt to prove your points. Cite other experts to support your argument.
— The article should end with some sense of finality; that is, attempt to summarize your main points, but do it in a way that leaves your reader thinking.
— Remember to include a title, a title page and a stylistically sound (APA) reference page.
