Case 1: You are caring for Jimmy who is a five-year-old patient with leukemia (ALL). Jimmy asks you the following questions. “What does God want me to do? Why did all of this happen?”
Choose two of the core attributes of spiritual care of the child with cancer at the end of life (Table 1. Attributes of the spiritual care of the child with cancer in Petersen, 2014) and corresponding suggestions for how to communicate as a nurse with this patient population.Using these two core attributes and suggestions as a guide, describe how you would respond.
Case 2: You are caring for Emma who is a six-year-old patient with an osteosarcoma with only a short time to live. You are assessing Emma when she states that she is “going to play with the angels in the corner of her room.”
