The characters and story of Peter Pan
Barrie, the youngest of 10 children, lost his elder brother David in a skating incident. Because of this, Barrie ceased growing at six, never grew higher than five feet, and didn’t start shaving until he was twenty-four. “All children, save one, grow up,” the book’s opening line states. They will soon grow up. After two, you always know. Two is the end.”
Peter Pan as well as “The Lost Boys” were also inspired by real-life youngsters. Sir Arthur Davies’ wife Sylvia Davies and the Llewelyn Davies lads (Nicholas, Jack, Peter, George, and Michael) were close friends of Barrie’s throughout his unhappy marriage to Lady Mary Ansell. In Kensington Garden, Barrie regularly pretended to be a pirate, walked on planks, and told them tales about fairies as well as birds. Thus, Barrie traces Peter Pan and The Lost Lads to the Llewelyn Davies boys’ wild adolescence. “I produced Peter Pan by rubbing vigorously together, like the wilds that ignite a fire with two sticks,” he says. “Peter Pan, the five you made.” (Garcia)
