Is Wikipedia a legitimate research source?^Remember that you need to choose a side of the argument.
First, consider whether you are for or against students using Wikipedia as a source for academic research. Maybe start with your initial position, and do some research to see if your position changes—this does happen. Writing is a process.
Next, think of three reasons why. These will be the basis for your three body paragraphs that will support your thesis claim in your upcoming Researched Argument Essay next week. Start your outline NOW; it will only save you time.
Now for this Annotated Bibliography assignment, consider your position on/side of the argument, and do some research to find three academic sources that work to prove each of your three reasons why (from above). You’ll have one article that proves your first reason why, one that proves your second reason why, and one that proves your third reason why (one source per body paragraph).
PRO-TIP/LOOKING AHEAD: As you begin drafting your essay next week, remember that we are working through the writing process. My advice is to write your outline first: thesis statement, topic sentences, and conclusion. Fill in with the links to the sources for each body paragraph. Then draft your essay from the outline.
Annotated Bibliography Assignment Instructions:
After reading pgs. 190-192 in your Norton text and looking at the sample Annotated Bibliography titled “Researching Hunger and Poverty” from the Norton text on pgs. 192-193, create your own properly MLA formatted Annotated Bibliography based on the three sources you find for your upcoming Researched Argument.
REQUIREMENTS: At least three academically sound sources, proper MLA format of the Sources (think Works Cited here), 150-word annotations for all three sources (450 words in total annotations, not including Works Cited entries)—pay close attention to the verb use in the Sample Annotation such as presents, explores, advocates, acknowledges, examines, etc. Use these verbs and other strong examples in your own annotations. Microsoft Word has a built-in thesaurus. Highlight a word, right click, and scroll to synonyms. Attach your Word document to the discussion board in an original post (do not COPY/PASTE into the discussion box). Failure to attach your file will result in a 0 for the assignment.
