For this assignment you will watch “Quiet Rage: The Stanford Prison Experiment” and summarize Philip Zimbardo’s prison experiment in two to three typed pages (double spaced with 12-point font). You will access the film through the University’s Library (see the below for instructions).
Zimbardo’s research is important for understanding the influence of groups and processes of group behavior. The text brings up Zimbardo in chapter six; make sure you read over it before you begin your write-up, so you will have relevant material to relate to the documentary. I also posted a link (i.e., Lucifer Effect), which gives you a little more information about Zimbardo and his research.
The following questions will help guide your write-up:
Describe, in general, what Zimbardo was researching. What was his research question? How is it
important for understanding group behavior?
What was the method? What specific methodological issues came up? For example, were there
issues with ethics, respondent selection, and generalization? You should go back to chapter
three for information on methods.
What were the findings? How did the findings related to concepts in the text or other course
material pertaining to chapters five and six (e.g., status, social roles)?
Building on the question above, how did Zimbardo’s findings relate to the abuse at Abu Ghraib?
How does Zimbardo’s research relate to other experiments described in chapter six (e.g.,
Milgram)?
Many concepts from chapters five and six are important for this experiment. Use the text or
other course material to bring in at least two concepts from chapters five and six. Additionally, bring in one concept from chapter three when describing Zimbardo’s research method.
Make sure you cite the text or lecture notes for relevant concepts and clarification. Include a reference page at the end of your write-up.
