Topic for my persuasive speech- Laugh more! It helps you live longer!
Thesis- Laugh more, It helps you live longer because it boosts your immune system and
reduces inflammatory compounds.

What are the objectives of the persuasive speech assignment (why are we doing
this)? To provide an opportunity for practicing presentation skills, to promote the critical
thinking skill of being able to consider/reason from/understand a variety of perspectives
other than one's own, to encourage informed global citizenship through the presentation
process, to promote information competency/literacy and to promote logical reasoning.
A persuasive speech attempts to change or reinforce the attitudes, beliefs, values
and/or behavior of an audience. Persuasive speeches may attempt to:
 Persuade the audience what is or what is not so.
o Example: “The Loch Ness Monster Exists” or “Artificial Sweeteners are Harmful
to Your Health”
 Persuade the audience how good or bad something is (the value/worth of an
idea, action, person, or object).
o Example: “Killing Animals to Get Meat is Morally Wrong” or "Civilian Border
Patrols are a Good Idea"
 Persuade the audience what ought to be (what should or should not be done).
o Example: “Violent Video Games Should Not Be Sold to Children” or “The
Drinking Age Should Be Lowered to Eighteen"
Your assignment: Persuade us about or to do something! It could be behaviors you
would like us to take on or change, or beliefs on which you would like us to agree with
you. It does not need to be related to your career choice/major.  Pick a topic you are
passionate about so your delivery shows that.

Requirements for outlines
An outline helps you to organize your speech properly and to ensure that you are
properly documenting your research. You are required to complete and turn in an
outline for the Informative and Persuasive speeches. Each outline is due on your
speaking day.
You need to address the following in your outlines:
 Proper heading information (topic, general purpose statement, specific purpose
statement, thesis)
 Proper numeration
 Complete sentences, in proper grammar, with proper punctuation
 Proper subordination
 Proper coordination
 Proper, complete description of Introduction:
o Attention getter
o Statement of topic
o Audience relevance/bond
o Statement of credibility
o Preview of main points
 Transitions in italics or parenthesis
 Proper, complete description of Conclusion:
o Signal of ending/transition
o Review of main points
o Final thought/clapline
 Proper citation of sources within your outline as how you’d say them verbally
 Works Cited in MLA format
