Workplace Discrimination Article #1
In the place of work, there are a lot of factors that need to be taken into consideration
to ensure that all the employees harmoniously coexist. One of these factors is ensuring that
the employees are treated equally regardless of their race, culture, sex, and religion. For this
assignment, the research article that I found conclusively address the issue of workplace
discrimination is Everyday discrimination in the workplace, job satisfactio, and
psychological wellbeing: age differences and moderating variables. What makes this article
ideal for this study is the effort that has been taken by the authors in ensuring the information
and they have provided in the article is reliable. This is supported by the data from the
research they conducted.
The Purpose of the Research
This research article mainly explores the significance of daily discrimination as well
as other psychosocial variables that influence the psychological wellbeing of individuals by
considering differences such as gender, age as well as socio-economic positions. The article
makes use of employees survey data that has been collected from different organizations in
Australia. The daily discrimination was considered based on the direct and indirect impact it
has on the job satisfaction as well as employees’ psychological wellbeing of employees. The
research used a total of 61 questions mainly focusing on satisfaction, respect, support, and
training among other factors.
The Target Population
In this research, the target population was pooled from different organizations in
Australia. The survey of the employees was conducted in two phases. The first phase was
during the middle of 2007 while the second face was in the middle of 2008. The
organizations in which the research was conducted include one national university, a national
manufacturing company, a roadside assistance division of a monitoring organization, and two
international freight terminals of a large international airline.
The Study Methodology
This study mainly made use of structural equation modeling in configuring a model
that includes psychosocial factors such as personally meaningful work, respect, job security,
support, and training. The daily discrimination as well as consultation with the supervisor
was mainly considered based on the direct impact it has on psychological wellbeing as well

as job satisfaction and the indirect impact it has on the psycho-social factors. What makes this
generalized model important is because it tries to describe the relationship present between
these factors within different genders, socio-economic positions, and age groups.
The Results of the Study
The study adopted initial exploratory factor analysis as a way of assessing the
composition of scales that are employed in measuring various constructs. However, before
this analysis, 5% of observations involving missing items were canceled. This left only
responses from 1,596 participants. Other than this, there are instances in which certain entries
were eliminated to make sure that the sought after the goodness of fit criteria is realized. The
constructs that resulted were then measured to identify discriminant validity. This was
achieved by focusing on where imputed correlations were prevalent based on the constructs
on which various items had been assigned.
Limitations of the Study
Several limitations are present in this study. One of the limitations is that the
constraints of space in the survey instrument used resulted in a weak measure of
psychological wellbeing in the study. This significantly limits any conclusion that can be
made from the study. Other than this, the cross-sectional design used in the study made it
impossible for the researchers to use the dynamic effects of discrimination in the study.
Conclusions of the Study
The study determined that the daily discrimination, directly and indirectly, influence
job satisfaction and psychological wellbeing of employees. However, due to the limitations
that were experienced during the study, another study needs to be conducted while taking into
account these limitations. This will help in giving more conclusive results about the study.
This article relates to my topic of workplace discrimination. This is because it
addresses the issue of discrimination through detailed research with proper findings. The
practice of treating all the employees equally ensures that no one is given better treatment in
the organization and that the tasks are performed based on the skills and expertise of an
individual. This ultimately leads to job satisfaction, employee retention, and productivity at
work.
