Literary Analysis
Prompt & Purpose:
For this essay, you will write a literary analysis on one of the following readings from unit 2:
▪ Sandra Cisneros, “Only Daughter” (91-94)
▪ Jenine Holmes, “When Pink Ballet Slippers Won’t Do” (206-209)
▪ Amy Tan, “Mother Tongue” (379-385)
▪ Gloria Anzaldua, “How to Tame a Wild Tongue (30-42)
These authors share experiences and discussions reflecting upon issues relating to language, culture,
and identify. Choose ONE text, determine its central theme, and develop a strong thesis introducing
the central theme. In your discussion of the text, analyze how the author uses literary devices,
rhetorical strategies, etc., to reinforce this theme as well as the effects these devices/strategies have
on the reading. Reflect on the explicit details as well any implied messages the author shares within
the reading. Think about how the author presents specific points and potential arguments.
You will need to:
▪ develop plausible and logical interpretations which show careful reading, understanding, and
insight of the text.
▪ organize these interpretations around several clear ideas from the literary work.
▪ support interpretations with textual evidence; text-to-self comparisons; and text-to-world
comparisons.
▪ turn to the language of the authors’ arguments, to take key phrases and passages from these
arguments and see how they might be used to investigate your case. Analyze passages from
all parts of the text rather than general references to early points and synthesize (that is,
apply) the textual analysis to your position.
▪ attend to the concrete details of your author’s text—concrete details from the work itself—
significant plot points, literary elements, theme, etc.—and explain how those examples
highlight a central analytical position.
