Wicked Problem Overview
Instructions: Identify your selected wicked problem in a few sentences.
My wicked problem is the availability and affordability of quality healthcare and health insurance to the
average American. A healthcare system currently revolves around doing things in a way that will get them
the most money both out of insurance and the patient. Additionally, insurance systems currently do things
that revolve around requiring more copays and coinsurance to cover minor things and have extremely high
monthly premiums.
Why Is This a Problem?

A healthcare system is essential in maintaining a healthy population. It includes access to services,
resources such as facilities and healthcare workers, and expenditures that play a critical role in ensuring a
healthy nation. The main goal of healthcare systems is to ensure good health of the population and in an
appropriate manner while utilizing available resources in the community as well as competing for needs
(Ganiga, Pai, & Sinha, 2018) . Access to quality and comprehensive health care services is essential in
maintaining and promoting health, managing diseases, preventing ailments, reducing premature death,
avoiding unnecessary disability, and achieving healthcare equity for all people in America and other
countries across the world. Additionally, access to health insurance coverage for all people is essential as
well. No one plans to get hurt or sick, but most people prefer having medical care at some point (Walls,
2018) . Health coverage helps people to settle the costs of health services and protects them from high
expenses that may drain them of financial freedom. Having health coverage helps to protect people from
high and unexpected medical costs
Enormous scientific research that is health-related is published annually having concrete evidence to make
improvements on the standards of treatment made by the healthcare systems. Following these publications
means that a physician will have to read at least 17 published scientific articles daily to be up to speed with
the research done (Pirkko, 2015) .
What Makes This Problem Wicked?

to qualify as sufficiently “wicked” for use, it should be at least “somewhat wicked” on a minimum of four criteria.

Dynamic Complexity: somewhat wicked
o The broad range of solution of the understanding the trends in healthcare management
depicts the need for up-to-date information on the management of health care systems to be
put in place. Therefore, research is necessary, as well as reviewing the research done by
others in the field.
Information Availability: somewhat wicked
o There is a comprehensive volume of scientific research and its implementation in the
healthcare system, especially in the United States. However, there are no clear concepts on
how the information in the study can be used in the implementation of advanced science in
medicine and more practical healthcare management and insurance.
Problem clarity: somewhat wicked
o The significant challenges in the implementation of scientific research are how the physician
can be able to read the publications and apply them in the treatment of the ailments that
occur to increase the quality of medical care. Medical physicians have the challenge of the
best determination from the information they have gotten. By the time they conclude, there is
newly developed research which is already published.
Solution clarity: extremely wicked
o With the increased advancement in technology and research methods and the urge to solve
the problems in healthcare, there is a need to conduct more scientific research and
incorporate in the healthcare system. The vast information available and the evolutionary
nature research becomes an issue in the implementation of the same in medicine.
Solution sufficiency: extremely wicked

o Implementation of the research in medicine takes more time since physicians have to go
through all the studies, which takes time, and costs money. Which in turn would relay the
costs to the patient, because insurance would find a way to not pay for it.
Solution size: somewhat wicked
o There is a wide range of finding solutions to the implementation of scientific research in
medicine, as well as finding a way to offer cheaper quality care to residents. Especially since
there will never be a decrease in need for medical care, since everyone ages, and everyone
will have an ailment at some point in their life.
Solution Reversibility: somewhat wicked
o The solutions provided in the implementation of science in medicine is something that
reversed when the applications do not conform to the required standards of medicine. Which
also would reverse the additional costs being poured onto American citizens.

I think that the concepts from data analytics could have a significant impact on the insight of the
availability and affordability of quality healthcare and health insurance. Data analytics can be used to gain
knowledge of the position of the company as a business, information regarding patients, employees,
medical staff, and other determining factors that could affect healthcare and insurance. Some examples
that data analytics could be used to examine the wicked problem include how many patients qualify and
are using Medicaid and Medicare, medial staff job satisfaction, number of visits it takes for someone to be
successfully treated, and categorized reasons as to why people don’t go to the doctor as frequently as they
should for preventative medical care.
