1. Discuss the ways in which one or more of the tales we have read illustrate the dual goal of “sentence” and “solas” that the Host sets for the pilgrims (see the General Prologue, 791-801). What kinds of “solas” do the tales offer? What complicates a simple reading of “sentence”?
2. Repetition—of key words, scenarios, events—with variation seems to be an important aspect of Chaucer’s poetic art. Show how and why a particular type of repetition proves important in one or more of the tales. For this topic, you may want to draw upon some of the thinking you’ve done for class exercises on keywords.
