First Paper—please re-write your first paper that you submitted in this course to meet these requirements:
Investigate either Chinese immigration to the United States or African-American migration within the United States. Based upon your investigations, choose one of these patterns and create a research design that includes a proposal, annotated bibliography, and an outline/abstract. Your research question should be centered on how your chosen immigration/migration pattern impacted American culture and society or how it affected U.S. government policy.
1. Proposal: Write a 200-300-word synopsis of your chosen research question based on the U.S. immigration/migration pattern you chose.
2. Informative Annotated Bibliography: Find a minimum of seven sources (A good mixture of primary and secondary sources) that support your research question. Discuss how each source supports, or contradicts, your research question. Please see the GCU Student Success Center resource, Preparing Annotated Bibliographies for additional information.
3. Research Summary: Write a 250-500-word summary based upon your research and revise your research question. Did the sources you find change your research question in any way?

Research Question
The research question identified for the purpose of the project is;
1. Why did the Chinese begin coming to the United States of America?
Synopsis
The Chinese migration into the United States of America is traced back to the period around 1850. In the beginning, the Chinese immigrants left their homes in rural China to come to the US to work in the vast railroads that were being constructed in the United States at the time. The main motivation for the Chinese immigrants coming to the United was the better economic opportunity that the country offered them. The Chinese offered cheap laborand by the 1870s there was so much hostility towards the Chinese as a result of the widespread economic depression at the time. The hostility saw Chinese immigrants confined to segregated ghettos knowns as Chinatowns. By 1882, the hostility got out of hands and the American congress was forced to pass the Chinese Exclusion Act. The Chinese Exclusion Act banned the movement of Chinese immigrants into the United States(“Chinese Immigration, n.d.; Chinese Immigration | History Detectives | PBS, n.d.”). The Act banning Chinese immigrants into the United States remained in force up until 1943 when China became an ally of the United States that the Chinese Exclusion Act repealed it. Even then, the Chinese migration into the United States was limited to only 105 people in a year. It was in 1965 that all restrictions against Chinese migration were lifted.
Annotated Bibliography

The article argues that the United States in the past and the present has been considered the land of opportunity. It is this notion that the US has several opportunities that attracted many Chinese immigrants into the country. Despite the US being considered to be a land of opportunities, the article explains that many natives complain about the immigration of foreigners especially the Chinese, for lowering the wages. While the article answers the research question, it also considers the Chinese immigrants’ reason for coming to the United States misguided because there were no decent opportunities in the United States when they arrived.
“Chen, J. J. (2015). The impact of skill-based immigration restrictions: The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. Journal of Human Capital, 9(3), 298–328.”
The article asserts that prior to the year 1854, only about 50 Chinese migrants were coming to the US, but this changed with the discovery of gold in California. The gold rush saw the number of Chinese immigrants moving to the United States increase to over 13000. The construction of the “transcontinental railroad and the adoption of the Burlingame Treaty” also provided job opportunities for the Chinese. The article answers the research question by describing the economic events that led to the Chinese immigrants coming to the US.

The article documents that the migration of the Chinese into the United States occurred in two faces. The first face is between the 1800s to the 1880s and thereafter haltered by the immigration policies and the second face began in the 1970s. The article answers the research question by explaining that economic pressures at home pushed the Chinese immigrants into moving to the United States of America.
