ESSAY 1 DRAFT: TAKING A STAND ON SOME ASPECT OF A CONTEMPORARY ESSAY Academic writers in the social sciences and the humanities enter into debates and conversations within their fields, clarifying, refuting, or elaborating on arguments that other writers have made. Often they advance ideas that spawn new debates that their colleagues and the educated public take seriously. All writers, though, must persuade their audience that their position on an issue is valid. They must take pains to define the reason for discussing an issue (motive), to express a precise and compelling idea about the issue (thesis), and to develop that idea with analytical claims, evidence, analysis, and attention to objections that an opponent might make to the idea (counterargument). To become familiar with the tools and experiences of academic writing, in your first essay you will take a stand on one of the three essays that we will be reading in our first unit: either Rose’s “Blue-Collar Brilliance,” or Alexander’s “The New Jim Crow,” or Moss’ “The Extraordinary Science of Addictive Junk Food.” After reading each of the essays, you’ll choose one of them and focus on a significant aspect of the essay’s argument with which you agree, disagree, or both. To craft an effective response, you’ll need to define your stance toward the idea on which you’ll focus in your selected essay, letting your reader (who hasn’t read the essay) know your motive for staking out your position. You’ll need to express your own arguable thesis, or overarching idea, and to persuade your reader that your position is valid by using evidence from your text and, if you wish, from your own experience (in the essay’s conclusion). To strengthen your argument, you may also wish to anticipate any objections that your reader might raise to your idea. ESSAY 1 REVISION REMINDERS AND UPLOAD The revised version of Essay #1, an essay in which you use evidence from your chosen essay to support an arguable thesis you have arrived at through close reading of the essay, should be a minimum of four pages long. There should be significant differences for the better between your first draft and this final product. Be prepared, in fact, to have the revision differ in most many from the original! To revise means, literally, to “re-see.” The best writers come to find their greatest excitement in the discoveries that attend the revision process. The process, of course, is not without struggle. You will find, though, that if you engage in revision in an open-minded way, you will become absorbed by what one writer has called “the fascination of what’s difficult.” TIPS — WRITE FOR A READER WHO HASN’T READ THE TEXT, i.e. take nothing for granted. — Your essay must be a four-to-five-page Word document, paginated, in 12 point type, with one-inch margins all around. Double space throughout the document, please. No extra space between paragraphs. — Strive for an accurate and interesting title, one that’s not just a label, but that will be clear to someone not in our class. To the left of the colon, create interest (based on the essay’s motive); to the right of the colon provide thesis info (e.g. author, title, gist). — Develop a thesis that is narrow enough to argue but wide enough to allow you to consider motive (what’s at stake, the puzzle, knot, context, or question that makes a thesis interesting). Motive makes an essay your own. — Create argumentative claims (ideas about the essay that support your thesis); don’t simply re-tell the main ideas of the essay. — Avoid quoting long passages from the essay; quotes should be short and pertinent to your argument. Avoid floater quotes, quotes with no explanatory clauses attached. — Keep the first person (I) and the second person (you) out of the essay, though, if it’s appropriate to your thesis, use of the first-person may be permissible in your essay’s conclusion. — Challenge yourself to write a conclusion that offers the reader a fresh idea, based on your thesis. — Attach a one-page cover letter in which you evaluate your revision. Tell me what you tried to argue, where you think you succeeded, where you think you didn’t. Make this cover letter better than your last one. — Use MLA in-text citations (parenthetical page references) every time you quote directly, paraphrase, summarize, or otherwise point to a specific moment in the text. See your Pocket Style Guide or the Purdue OWL website. Your grade may be affected if your citations and “Works Cited” list are improperly and/or inconsistently done. I also don’t want a lot of outside sources referenced try and stick mostly to the article itself. After the draft is completed I need this with it as well. I need to know  the subject of the essay (rephrase the thesis statement—do not just copy and paste the essay’s thesis) and tell them what you think its strengths and weaknesses are the essays strength and weaknesses. This piece should be done after the works cited. The title of the essay should be clever while also referencing the article in a way that someone who has not read the article will know what the essay is about.
