Second Essay Assignment

Directions: You are to write an essay of 4 to 5 pages in length in which you address one of the topics listed below. Your essay needs to have a heading, numbered pages, be double spaced throughout, cited following either MLA or APA guidelines, and include a works cited list. CITE SOURCES!!!!!

The essay is due on May 10th in Blackboard. This is an absolute deadline. NO EXTENSIONS FOLKS! Of course, you can submit the essay earlier.

Sources: You must use at least four sources. Two of these sources must be books (not your textbooks). One source must be from either JSTOR or Project MUSE (check with the library for how to access these data bases). You may choose one other source that is either a book, an additional article from JSTOR or MUSE or another web source. You cannot use encylopedias as sources!

Grading: The essay is worth 100 points. You will be graded on (1) accuracy of content, (2) structure of your presentation (i.e. how well you structure and present you answer to the topic question), (3) mechanics (i.e. spelling, margins, spacing, proper use of citations, etc.).

Choose from one of the topic areas listed below. There are many subjects that you can pick that fall within these topic areas. Think about the topic area an pick as specific issue or event to write about. Be sure to discuss your choice with me before you start your research. This is very important!!!!!!

(1) The New Deal: Pick one or two programs of the new deal and thoroughly examine them. Explain what they were intended to do and whether or not they acheived their pupose.

(2) World War II: You may pick a topic dealing with military history ( a battle for example) or domestic history (the role of women during the war, how the war affected minorities in American, etc) See me for specific examples.

(3) The Cold War: You may focus on some major aspect of the cold war such as the Korean Conflict, Vietnam War, The Cuban MIssile Crisis, efforts to prepare Americans for a possible Soviet attack, The Red Scare of the 1950s, the affect of the cold war on American culture, etc. See me for speciic ideas if you choose to write on this topic area.

(4) Major developments of the 1960s. Here you can pick a subject dealing with Vietnam, the Civil Rights Movement, the Counter Culture, the Women’s Movement, etc. See me for ideas re your specific choice.

(5) The 1970s or 1980s. Here you can choose topics such as Watergate, The popular culture of the 1970s, a topic on foreign policy such as Detente, the conservative program of Ronald Reagan during the 1980s, the birth of the computer revolution or the birth of the internet, etc. Again, see me about choosing a specific topic.

*Other topics are possible but you need to clear them with me first.
