The coursework, which accounts for 40% of the module mark, will take the form of a short written report that you will be required to complete in exam conditions in class. The research done for the coursework and the in-class method of testing is to help you to prepare for the end of semester exam.
The issue to be addressed in class will be known and should be researched in advance. The test will take place in your usual seminar class in week beginning 7 March 2016.
There will be further guidance nearer the time on what we mean by exam conditions.
The issue to be addressed in your report is as follows. Given the failure of the financial system in the late 2000s, discuss the role of financial intermediation and come up with some recommendations about how the system could be better regulated. Your report should address the following
background to the financial system and markets as a whole
the main functions of financial intermediaries
the purpose of the different financial institutions in the financial system
where the risks lie
where the regulators went wrong (using the risk examples you have been given)
what could be done better
The test will be closed-book and writing paper will be supplied. You should try and include at least three sources correctly cited and referenced.
