Since the creation of the electronic medical record, it becomes easy for anyone to have access to
healthcare information. In most hospital systems, all levels of staff from administration to the
housekeepers have access to perform job duties.
A real-world incident that sticks out in my mind would be the unethical violation of Jason Pierre-
Paul’s admission to Miami Jackson Medical center. Due to leaking of the hospital stay where he
suffered an amputation of a finger due to a July 4 th fireworks accident ruined his career.
It could be said that someone of celebrity status would use a fake name when registration.
However, rumor has it from my sister who works for the health system that a male nurse in the
emergency room is the one who performed the leak. The male nurse recognized the football
player while being treated. The male nurse was not directly treating him, but was an avid football
fan. Reportedly, the male nurse snapped a photo of the records with his cell phone.
It is a great thing with embedded features within a medical record system that he was discovered
as the leaker. Imaging what would have happened if it was a paper chart. There would be no
tracking system of who performed the act. My sister works within the long term care setting on
campus and reports that extensive HIPAA training has been taken place.
Mr. Pierre-Paul is in the process of suing the hospital and ESPN for invasion of privacy. The
male nurse could possibly lose his nursing license. As I begin to study topics for the course, one
topic would be in Module 4-Use of EHR. I think nurses should not have access to patients whom
they are not assigned to. Possibly management can change the medical record system where a
person can be assigned certain patients to enter the record system.
