1.In four sentences, describe what happens when you partially melt a peridotite at a convergent or divergent boundary. What is the word used for the composition of a peridotite and what does it mean, and which minerals in the peridotite are melting? What is the word used for the composition of the magma that would form from this partial melting process, and what is the name of the volcanic rock that would form if this magma erupted at the surface? What minerals would make up this volcanic rock? (3 pts)
2.Using what you know about fractional crystallization, what minerals would form if you let a large body of basaltic magma cool slowly in the lower continental crust? What order would they crystallize in, and why? (3 pts)
3.In three or four sentences, compare and contrast the volcanoes youd expect to find a convergent and divergent plate boundaries. Whats the difference between the volcanism youd expect where an (older) oceanic plate subducts beneath a (younger) oceanic plate, and where an oceanic plate subducts beneath continental lithosphere? What type of magma would you expect to find erupting from a volcano on oceanic lithosphere beneath a hot spot? (3 pts)
4.The second exam will focus heavily on earthquakes at divergent and convergent plate boundaries, and about volcanism at plate boundaries and from hot spots. Which of these topics do you feel most insecure about, and what will you do to prepare for the exam to correct this? (1 pt)
