Instructions Answer any THREE of the following questions completely and coherently. Be sure to number your answers according to the numbers on this sheet. Your answers are to be typed, doublespaced, using a 12-point font. I’m looking for roughly 1 to 1 ½ pages for each question, and the completed exam should not be more than 6 typed pages. All answers must be your own opinion and analysis and must not incorporate information from any source other than our textbook. If you use any direct quotations from the textbook, be sure to indicate and cite them in MLA format. Composing this exam will help you meet the following learning outcomes: Write an essay about the literature using the principles of good writing as set forth in Composition I:  unity, coherence, development, mechanics, style   Write an essay employing library sources; to show the procedure according to the MLA Style Manual for collecting sources and citing references.   Examine the relevance of literature to personal, academic, and professional life.   4. Read the poem below, and write an essay describing the figures of speech it contains as well as the effect that figurative language has on the reader’s understanding of the poem. “Noah, At Six Months” By Maxine Kumin While, this rainy summer of 1990 the swollen pond pushes past its spillway, bean seeds rot in their rows and lilacs bead up but drop their thousand lavender nubs unopened, one silvery baby named Noah is almost sitting alone now. He sucks his fingers like ten tarts. Through drool and Bronx cheer he crows, inventing speech. A river of vowels starts, broken here and there by the chance rapids of new consonants. We kindle a fire in the parlor stove. The farmhouse steams with the smell of damp wool recurling its filaments, like family feeling. Shall we say all this is Noah’s marvelous work? Today in the rain our world is cupped in his ark. 2. We’ve spent a lot of time this semester reading things that are considered classic LITERATURE. Going beyond the boundaries of our textbook, what example from popular culture would you point to as literary? (It might be a popular novel, a movie, a TV show, a music album, etc.) What leads you to choose this work as something that rises above other examples of popular culture to be truly outstanding? (It may help you to first form a definition of “literature,” and then discuss how your choice meets the criteria as you’ve defined them). 3. Imagine that you are tutoring a college student in this class, and you have to select one work of short fiction to demonstrate as many of the literary elements we have covered (plot, characters, setting, etc.) as possible. Which work would you choose, and what elements does that story typify (USE Amy Tan’s “A Pair of Tickets.”) OR William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” for this question
