Situation: You’re the communications director for InterMED, a major international-development agency conducting HIV research in South Africa. Your agency’s research includes studies of investigational therapies (ie, new drugs) in human subjects. To attract eligible participants, InterMED offers free medical care for the duration of each study.Recently a local government official, Dr. Naidoo, leveled an explosive charge. He said your researchers failed to obtain the informed consent of the people they were studying. Participants didn’t understand that data were being gathered on them.“Sure, they signed the forms,” said Dr. Naidoo. “But they didn’t know what they were signing.”Your researchers admit they could have done more to ensure understanding, but they’re loathe to dismiss the data they’ve collected so far.
