Throughout the novel we are introduced to two different love stories taking place. One is
between young Eta and Bimaadiz and the other is between Dr. Apelles and Campaspe. To be
honest, the love story surrounding Dr. Apelles confused me a little because it seemed that he was
having affairs with several different women but was always truly in love with Campaspe. It was
a little messy but the story between Eta and Bimaadiz was much clearer and I thought it was a
very sweet story. We see the difference in gender roles as Bimaadiz must prove himself as a man
to Eta’s parents in order to marry her. I found it interesting that even though Eta was a girl, she
hunts and traps. We also see that Eta is very brave as she chases after Bimaadiz when he is
kidnapped and rescues him. We see how she is gentle with him and how Bimaadiz in return cares
for her, rescues her and is a good companion to her as well as her best friend. I don’t see the
gender roles as very flexible. Eta was not allowed to do as she wanted and could not marry
whomever she pleased without her parent’s permission. As a boy, Bimaadiz was expected to be
wealthy and provide for both Eta and her parents if he wished to marry the young girl. And as a
girl, Eta is expected to marry for wealth and advantage rather than for love. Compared to the way
things are in Dr. Apelles’ culture, we see that he is free to do as he pleases as he has several
different affairs with women who are all very different, though in the end he ends up with the
one girl he really loves and who is in love with him too. This shows us that things in the past,
during the time of Eta and Bimaadiz, things were very different than things are for Dr. Apelles.
His time is more modern and is easily compared with the way relationships happen today, but for
Eta and Bimaadiz things were not so easy. We also see that even though both relationships
seemed private to the couples, most everyone else around them knew what was most likely going
on. For the most part Dr. Apelles was a very private man but was open about his relationship
with Campaspe to the point that Jesus was very jealous because he also liked Campaspe. The
relationship between Eta and Bimaadiz was also fairly private for the most part but people often
caught them sneaking off together and both of their parents were aware that the two were very
good friends and assumed that they probably liked each other as well. Gitim also knew that they
were together and was very jealous just as Jesus was. Maanendamookwe was another example of
the fact that the children’s relationship was not so private. I think that Eta and Bimaadiz were so
very much in love that they did not realize how obvious they were about their feelings and it
seemed that everyone knew about them.
