Develop a thesis statement and cite appropriate evidence to back-up your argument in relation
to the application of three different criminological theories to one of the following crime types:
 Drug crime
 Cyber crime
 Gang crime
Steps:
1.) Choose one of the crime types above to focus upon. Select the crime type/topic that interests
you the most. Your interest in the topic will carry the day and help you complete the
assignment. However, please be sure to choose a topic that you will feel comfortable
researching. Please do not choose a topic that you think could stress you out. At the end of
the day, please keep in mind that you need to be able to complete your assignments
in order to complete the course.
2.) Using canlii.org, conduct research to find 3 separate published criminal case judgements
that may be categorized under the crime type you chose to focus upon (e.g., find three
published case judgements concerning 3 different drug-related offences). The case
judgements must be in relation to different offenders/offences, and not all about the same
case.
3.) Identify additional facts about each case that may not have been reported in the case
judgment by finding at least one newspaper article for each of the 3 case judgements.
4.) Briefly summarize the facts of each chosen case.
5.) Apply three different suitable criminological theories (e.g., biological-level, psychologicallevel and/or sociological-level) to explain the occurrence of your one chosen crime type
(e.g., crime of morality, cyber crime or terrorism) (one different theory per case judgment).
6.) Develop a thesis statement for your paper.
7.) To support your argument/thesis in relation to the application of each criminological theory,
cite appropriate evidence throughout your paper:
a. Boyd (2019)
b. at least 3 different published case judgments (www.canlii.org)
(i.e., different offenders/cases)
c. at least 3 newspaper articles (i.e., one relating to each different offender/case)
d. at least 3 academic journal articles
(i.e., the idea is that, for every case judgement, you will have at least one newspaper
article and one journal article)
8.) Be sure to critically analyze the application/fit of each criminological theory to each criminal
case.
