Chemistry 1060 is a survey of organic chemistry and biochemistry emphasizing the major metabolic activities in living
organisms. By the end of the semester students should have a strong understanding of the significance of the many
organic molecules of life. This course is an excellent preparation for students interested in careers in the health
sciences.
Semester credit: 4
Prerequisite: CHEM 1050 or equivalent
Textbook
The textbook we will be using for this course is General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, Stoker, 7th Edition. If you
took CHEM 1050, this course uses the same textbook. CHEM 1050 covers the first 10 chapters, and this course covers
Chapters 12 thru 26. You should also have an OWL access code that you used for the homework with CHEM 1050. If
you purchased your course material for CHEM 1050 thru the Macomb Bookstore, their package includes a 24 month
OWL access code and that access code also covers this course. If you have this, you are all set for our course. If you
purchased your CHEM 1050 material directly from Cengage, then you probably have just the 4 month access code, so
you will need to purchase a new one. If you need the textbook and OWL access code for our course, there are two
options that are available through the Macomb Bookstore.
Option #1
If you are more comfortable with a hard copy of the textbook to read, then you will want the option listed as General,
Organic & Biol Chem: Hybrid (w/OWLv2 Access). This includes both the hard copy of the textbook bundled with an OWL
access code for the online homework. By the way, the OWL account that you will set up by using this access code also
includes the ebook version of the textbook (Cengage calls the ebook “MindTap”), so if you decide to go with this option,
you will get all three; the hard copy of the textbook, the ebook of the textbook, and an access code for the OWL
homework.
Option #2
If you are comfortable just working from an ebook, then you will want the option listed as OWLv2 Quick Prep for General
Chemistry for Stoker’s General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, 7th Edition, Instant Access, 4 terms (24 months). This
includes the course ebook (MindTap) and the OWL access code that you will need to set up the homework.
The 24 month term for this option offered by the Bookstore is designed for use with both CHEM 1050 and CHEM 1060,
and since you have already completed CHEM 1050, or an equivalent, there is another option if you are confident that
you will be able to successfully complete the course this summer. When you use the link below to set up your OWL
account, you can either log into your existing Cengage account (if you have taken CHEM 1050) or you will be asked to set
up a new account. In that case, you will also see the option to purchase an OWL access code (Cengage Unlimited)
directly from Cengage. That access code is lower in cost than what you see from the bookstore, but is only good for four
months.
If you already have a used copy of the textbook, that could save you some money. Watch out though, because you will
still need an OWL access code. Even if one was bundled with the textbook when it was originally purchased, that access
code is not transferable
