Capabilities-based competition

  1. Capabilities-based competition and a firm’s resources-based perspective

The resource-based viewpoint critical to business success. According to this viewpoint, an organization’s resources are used to gain a competitive advantage. Distinctive resources that result in operational superiority or aid in the creation of a superior market position allow the organization to generate superior profits, in other words, it has a strategic impact on performance (Collis and Montgomery, 1995). The source of its capabilities is identified as resources (Slack et al., 2015). As a result, resources are internally measured considering competitive factors (Pisano and Shih, 2009).

According to Collis and Montgomery (1995), a company achieves superior performance by deploying valuable resources in strategy. The resource-based view emerges from strategic management literature; however, the concept of sustained competitive capabilities driven by valuable resources is associated with the resource perspective of operations strategy (Slack et al., 2015). Sadun et al. (2017) discovered a positive relationship between managerial competence and superior company performance. Accordingly, there has long been a relegation of management practice importance, and the enhancement of the practice generally faces certain problems such as unsophisticated perception; governance structure; lack of capability or skills; and organizational culture. It is possible to create causal ambiguity when overcoming barriers.

Both Stalk et al. (1992) and Slack (2015) proposed a strategy known as “capabilities-based competition,” and Collis and Montgomery (1995) introduced the firm’s resources-based view (RBV). These strategies aimed to identify and develop the difficult-to-copy capabilities that set a company apart from its competitors. However, the main difference between the two strategies was that RBV based its competitive strategy on its resources (assets and capabilities). Specific capabilities are adopted to build for competition, and competitive success was dependent on transforming key processes of a company into strategic capabilities that provided high value to customers. The RBV strategy, in particular, viewed companies as different physical and intangible assets and determined a company’s strengths from its capabilities (internal capabilities – what a company does well and external industry and competitive environment – market demands and competitor’s offers). Also, capability can be defined as a set of strategically understood business processes, and a capability was strategic only when it began with identifying customer needs and ended with satisfying them. Furthermore, rather than viewing services as a profit center strategy viewed as part of an integrated productivity that was used to maintain efficiency and maximize life cycle profitability (Ketokivi and Schroeder, 2004).

Nonetheless, it was difficult for companies that used the RBV strategy to identify and objectively evaluate these resources. Few businesses had the good fortune to begin as capabilities-based competitors. Stalk et al. (1992) also proposed that in order to transform itself into a capabilities-based competitor, a company should organize selected capabilities and ensure that it has enough resources and training for employees to achieve its competitive goals, as well as create a measurement for aligning interests and rewarding them. Stalk et al. (1992) stated that “capabilities are frequently mutually exclusive.” As a result, rather than selecting a competition strategy based on various capabilities, companies tend to select specific capabilities to build their operations strategy. The research looks at several related topics, including operations capabilities, operations strategy, and operations management. The study adds to the existing body of knowledge by introducing a new perspective and some novel thinking about operational capabilities. The first contribution is related to the ongoing process of learning about operations capabilities.

  1. Operational Capabilities

Garvin (1987) used cost (price), quality, flexibility, delivery, and service as operational capability dimensions. Despite research indicating that innovation and sustainability are important aspects of operational capabilities (Vickery, et al., 1993; Pisano, 2015). The trade-off model and the cumulative (or sand-cone) model are two common models for the relationship between different capabilities. Some operations capabilities are more strategically important than others in the trade-off model, and they are distinct and developed one at a time (Pisano, 2015). As a result, managers must be selective in where they focus their attention
