INSTRUCTIONS: I would like you to read and respond to the labeled discussion 1-5. Use outsides citations/sources to help support your argument on whether you agree or disagree with classmates discussions.if you agree why and if not why not. Separate each discussion. Below are RESPONSES OF 5 CLASSMATES. Discussion# 1 from Sophia: An influencing tactic that I would use is rational persuasion. This influencing tactic “includes logical arguments with factual evidence to persuade the person that the behavior will result in meeting the objective” (Lussier, 2019). Assuming that the sales manager is someone who is more influenced by thinking than by emotions, this tactic should help achieve both of our goals. Using the guidelines outlined in the textbook for this influencing tactic I will begin by explaining the importance of the sales team placing orders appropriately. It is important that the sales team do not overwhelm the production department because it is not physically possible to meet the customers demands by their scheduled delivery dates. Since customers are placing blame on the production department, their satisfaction towards our whole company will significantly decrease. This can stir away customers and cause them to search for their product with a competitors company. The sales staff will benefit from scheduling delivery dates with appropriate delivery dates because when the customer receives their product in the time they are expecting or even earlier, their satisfaction can increase. Increased satisfaction can lead to more sales which will benefit the sales staff individually. Overall, if the sales team complies with the production/ delivery rate of the production team both teams will benefit from the customer’s satisfaction and business. discussion two from Elizabeth: It’s clear that the production and sales department desperately need to meet in order to resolve the situation. Though the production department is taking the blame for late deliveries I would not begin the meeting with handing off blame to the sales department or using any accusatory language to the sales team. I would approach the situation as a miscommunication or misunderstanding between parties. With both parties understanding this, we can move on to resolving the situation, first with the use of influencing. Influencing is the power or ability to get others to do something they may not otherwise in order to assist you in meeting your objectives. It’s not coercive or subversive but to be influential in getting others to see your point and want to help. Often influence is rooted in seeing how others can help themselves through helping someone else. First, I would use the tactic of creating a win-win situation. I can show the sales manager the personal gain they will receive if they help the production department: better interpersonal relations between departments, the opportunity for cross-training that promotes understanding and growth, the potential to streamline processes and make work easier for all parties involved. I would then move on to using rational persuasion, in which I present evidence and facts that support the idea that helping production will help sales meet their own personal objectives. The blame directed toward the production department cannot last – eventually production employees will be upset with sales and the negativity will fly, or sales will make similar errors with other departments that reach leadership, or that make create margins that appear as if sales are down and therefore profit is down as well. If I can gather information on sales profits and projections, production costs, and leadership objectives, then I can illustrate to the sales manager that helping work out the issue absolutely helps their department out in the long run and will keep them on track for their own benchmarks and goals. Between both tactics, I should be able to convince the sales manager that helping my team is to help themselves, and that my team will do anything possible to resolve the situation as well. discussion 3 from aiofe:I am involved in several network groups that help me in my work. In addition to the regular groups like SHRM and ATD, I am involved in a group focused in the international arena. The HR Mobility Peer group is fantastic for people who are working with other countries. We now have 2,000 members. This group is comprised of HR mobility professionals and we have optional calls with different topics each week. We also have a LinkedIn group where we can ask any international questions of each other. If I have a question, I can almost guarantee I’ll get a very fast and accurate response or guidance from the group. It’s also a great group for recruiting talent. discussion 4 from Michelle: I would employ two influencing tactics in my meeting with the sales staff manager. Before this I would try to read the manager and try to see things from their perspective and understand their expectations. First, I would use the ingratiation tactic to set a good mood. I would praise the manager for the way they had organized and coordinated the sales department and the positive impact they have had on the sales department and the organization as a whole. Next I would employ rational persuasion. I would explain that the delivery dates promised by some of the sales staff are unrealistic. The resulting late deliveries reflect badly on the department, the manager and the organization as customers are upset. This has not been a problem in the past when the sales staff followed the guidelines for promised delivery dates that had been decided before. To rectify this, I would recommend two steps. First, there needs to be a staff meeting where this problem is discussed, and sales staff are told what realistic dates can be expected. Second, when an order is placed in the computer system it will post a delivery date that the sales staff cannot override without a manager’s approval. Alternatively, the manager could be encouraged to meet with the managers of production and shipping to see if earlier delivery times are available. I consider this a less attractive alternative as the sales staff manager has little or no control over these departments and may not clearly understand all the factors that go into processing and delivering an order.
