Your task for this essay will be to present a researched argument that would fit into a conversation with the sources you used for Paper 2. You will base this essay off of the one you wrote for Paper 2, taking it from a synthesis to an argument of your own.
Audience: Identify an audience for your argument, and choose argument strategies, rhetorical appeals, and a writing style appropriate to that audience. Keep in mind what your audience is likely already to know and what they will need to be informed about, what interests or values they have regarding your topic, and what counterarguments they might raise that you will have to address.
Genre (type of paper): An academic argument focuses on the position a writer takes on a topic, the claims the writer makes about the topic, and the evidence the writer includes to support the claims, and the structure or format. It also includes the appeals that the writer uses to try to influence the audience.
Preparing for Writing the Paper: Identify an issue or question in your topic, about which you might make an argument or take a specific stance.
Formulate a thesis in response to that issue or question. As discussed in our textbook, that thesis should not simply be your opinion, but should be an argument that adds in some way to the discussion. Examples from the textbook include correcting misconceptions, extending what others have said, etc.
In writing your essay, keep in mind that you will need to adjust how you use your sources. Instead of synthesizing sources in order to give an overview of the topic, you are now using sources in support of your own stance. That may involve changing which quotes/paraphrases you use, making clear which sources are in line with your argument and which might be counterarguments, and so on. However, because your task is still to do a researched argument, you should aim to still include a good amount of source material in your essays. If you find that you need to change a few sources from the ones you used in Paper 2, feel free.
Along with your essay itself, you should also include a short statement indicating who your audience is—be as specific as you can about this audience as a way of helping us understand your rhetorical choices regarding style, appeals, and so on. Include this statement just before or after your Works Cited page.
Criteria for Evaluation:
Include thesis that explicitly states the writer’s position
Place the argument within the context of your synthesis
Indicate clearly of why the topic matters
Provide good claims and evidence to support your claims
Use an authoritative tone and clarify your stance
Provide effective appeals to the reader’s values
Length: 4-5 pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman font, 1 inch margins, plus Works Cited
