Year One students – around 2,000 words; For Pre-Masters students – around
2,500 words

2. Presents clear position and own voice throughout (you argue consistently your
thesis statement through evaluative language in the concluding sentences,
evaluation and conclusion paragraphs)

3. Clear well-structured paragraphs (for example: introduction, first main body,
second main body, evaluation paragraph and conclusion)

4. Topic sentences in each paragraph (this introduces the main idea/s of what each
paragraph will deal with)

5. Supporting examples with in text references from your sources

6. Ideas linked logically with connectors (use words such as: firstly, however, this

10. Language or ideas are not repetitive (do not keep repeating the same ideas,
avoid over use of the same words; use synonyms)

12. References are on separate page at end of essay and correct, in alphabetical
order by the author’s surname or organization

13. Appendices are after the references page, they include the full data or graphs.
In the essay you will refer to them only, not include them in therein; use
language such as: “Data has shown that ….. (see appendix 1)”

14. Sources are reliable. This means that you will have 8 to 10 sources or more.
Some of them will be media (newspapers), books, academic journals,
international organisations, government documents… Do not have too many
media sources as they have limited reliability. Check they are up to date too.

15. You will have paraphrased or summarised your sources in your own words.

16. Quotes are used once or twice only in the essay. They must be justified as
intrinsically relevant and not overused. (indent your quote on a separate line,
