Report/Dissertation Structure
You MUST use the following structure (unless you are working within a discipline or on a topic in which parts of this structure don’t make sense – in which case, a new structure should be negotiated with your dissertation supervisor and with Catherine Bates and/or Rosa Mas Giralt, as the module leader):
Title Page: title of dissertation, student number, programme of study, date.
Acknowledgements: anyone to whom you owe particular thanks for their support with this project. But remember that you must retain anonymity for the organisation(s) used for the research
Contents page
Abstract: maximum 250 words. Note that an abstract is a brief summary of the whole dissertation. It provides an overview of:
⦁ The topical focus of the dissertation and its significance.
⦁ Research question/s and/or aim/s
⦁ Methodology (data collection methods and sampling if appropriate)
⦁ Key findings
⦁ Conclusion/s and recommendations (if appropriate)
Introduction: reasons for undertaking the research, context of the research, aim and objectives (approx. 1,000 words)
Review of the literature: (approx. 3,500 words)
⦁ The literature review aims to provide a succinct, clear indication of issues relevant to your chosen topic and a consideration of the range of views which relate to your chosen topic. It must be presented using themes/issues identified, ideally as headings, e.g. barriers to parental involvement in schools. It should also inform the methods used to carry out the research.
Methodology: (approx. 2,000 words)
⦁ what are the research/enquiry questions? Are there any ethical issues that need consideration?
⦁ what methods/techniques are used and why? You need to review the research methods literature in terms of the range of methods available & advantages & disadvantages of each method first, & then discuss the rationale for the methods you have chosen.
⦁ reference to any previous research using similar methods (link to literature review) to address the questions. There should be a clear link established between the selected issues arising from your literature review and your chosen research methods
⦁ what is the total research population (participants), e.g. all TAs in School X, & how have you selected the sample used for the research, e.g. 50% of the total number of TAs
⦁ Critical reflection on the research method(s) used & their effectiveness must be included
Analysis of Findings: (approx. 3,500)
⦁ identify themes which come out of the data collected which you should use as headings to discuss your findings. These themes should be ones you’ve identified in the literature review, e.g. barriers to parental involvement in schools
⦁ your discussion must be analytical rather than descriptive
⦁ discussion of each theme should include data from all your research methods, e.g. questionnaires & interviews
⦁ use tables/figures, if relevant, & discuss the information contained in each
⦁ include brief quotes from your respondents where these help to illustrate your findings
⦁ link your findings to ideas and theories raised in the literature review but do not write another literature review
DescriptionDissertation proposal:
Title of proposed dissertation: The Civil War in Yemen. To what extent is this a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran?
Description of subject area
Yemen has been plagued by civil war many times in the past, however the current conflict was further intensified 5 years ago by a Saudi led intervention. This intervention was backed by the internationally recognised government and former president Ali Abdullah Saleh to oust the Houthi rebels who are widely believed to be backed by Iran. Thus compelling my desire to research this topic further and examine the nature of the proxy war and evidence surrounding Iran’s involvement.
The civil war began initially as a result of the Arab Spring. Protestors took to the streets of Sanaa (the capital city) to protest the 33 year reign of Saleh, and to coerce an election. It was some time before he would eventually step down allowing his deputy to takeover, with support from the international community. The new government’s attempts at constitutional and budget reforms were rejected by a group of rebels from the north known tribally as Houthis. the Houthis are Zaydi Shia’s and they led a hostile takeover of the capital causing the sunni government to flee and go into hiding.
it was after the takeover that Saudi and other gulf countries intervened and began airstrikes causing the Houthis to return fire. Saudi claims that these airstrikes are the result of Iran wanting to attack them as they are the US’s chief ally in the region, and the US is putting pressure on them to renegotiate the nuclear deal which Iran does not want to do. The houthis claim that the airstrikes are retaliation for Saudi’s intervention. The level of influence or involvement that Iran has is disputed.
