Instructions: In order to convince readers to agree with you, write a five-(or more) paragraph essay presenting an argument for or against a current issue. An issue is a matter of public concern. A brief history of the issue must be included in the introduction followed by a persuasive thesis. I find that the clearest pattern for a persuasive thesis is classification. The thesis must include the arguable point and the scope of your argument. The body of the essay must include logical arguments, emotional arguments, and your response to at least one counter-argument. Visit “What is a Rhetorical Argument?”
Sample 3-part classification/persuasive thesis: The current war on terrorists must be re-considered because it is actually terrorizing U.S citizens in a variety of ways: we have lost our freedom of privacy, our sense of security, and our sense of dignity.
(In this thesis I have underlined the arguable point and set the scope in bold type. The body of the paper, according to this scope, will include a minimum of three paragraphs of argument. You will then need a paragraph for introduction and a paragraph for conclusion plus your paragraph of counter-argument. )
You will need at least two quotes documented using MLA.
