International media announced to the world on August 13, 2020, concerning the monumental news concerning the peace agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates (‘the UAE’). The agreement is referred to commonly as the Abraham Accords. The opportunity came when Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu delayed the annex of the West Bank territory on July 1, 2020. Because of this important turning point, the UAE decided to pledge relation normalization with Israel in the historical Abraham Accords.
The peace agreement between Israel and the UAE to normalize their relationship is also open to other Arab nations. Shortly after that, other Arab counties such as Egypt and Jordan, Joined the UAE in the agreement with Israel. The actions of the UAE also encouraged more Arab countries to consider joining the Abraham Accords and publicly invited Oman and Bahrain.
However, not all Arab countries were open to the idea. Turkey, Iran, and Qatar have openly criticized the signing of the Abraham Accords and held firm in their anti-Israeli agenda. While there is an amount of discord with these countries, Sudan and Morocco have already signed comparable agreements with Israel leading to more Gulf States to follow in the near future. Former President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, along with his son-in-law, Jared Kushner and his advisor Avi Berkowitz played an important part in brokering the agreement. Trump’s goal for the agreement was to help make important steps in creating a conflict-free, thriving, and dependable Middle East.
The Abraham Accords and similar agreements are met to establish stronger diplomatic ties, normalization, and peace between the UAE and Israel. Each state will proceed with establishing embassies and assigning ambassadors in the immediate future. This is an important step to peace and stability in the region while agreeing to recognition of Israel, mutual understanding, and co-exitance. However, it is also important to note that Palestine still holds discontent in the agreement due to a 72-year period in which Arab countries have aligned with them to refuse such arraignments with Israel. It is foreseeable that repercussions could occur in the Middle East as retaliation for the Abraham Accords.
The UAE-Israel peace agreement is the primary focus of this study. This paper will address a number of the dynamics between Israel and the Arab nations in the Middle East region. Some challenges still exist in the area and have given rise to conflicts in the past. However, to achieve an acceptable level of success in the future of the region, there must be a more peaceful and cooperative approach to realizing the goals of the Abraham Accords. This paper will attempt to redefine the current circumstances and the important steps that could change the region long into the future.
The Abraham Accords peace agreement is a critical path that can help resolve the differences between Israel and the UAE. However, this is a significant step for the UAE and all Arab nations in the Middle East region. This agreement may also become a foundation for the future relationships of the Arab nations and Israel for generations to come. This research is important to fully understand how the Israeli and Arab nations are able to set aside their difference and look to finding solutions to generations of conflict. Understanding the Abraham Accords and the region’s dynamics is essential to what may come in the near future for Israel and the Arab nations.
