I see this argument being synonymous with “judging the past with present standards enables us to fulfill the purposes of studying history.” So, this essay would need to describe the goal of studying history, and how judging with present standards fulfills the aims.

As we cannot discard our present worldviews, we cannot be objective when studying history.
The reason presentism is avoided by historians is because they fear distorting history and promotes arrogance and bias. While one cannot say that past people existed for their future offspring, it can be argued that humans are fundamentally seekers of knowledge and truth (so humanity is constantly moving towards the truth; this implies that we can use our present standards (not necessarily because our standards are perfect but because they are the closest to the truth that humanity has ever had)). Thus, by viewing past events and figures with the modern lens, we can understand historical events and figures within the larger context of humanity.
History is not disjointed, with the past being the basis of the present, and the present being the basis of the future. In all of these times, there is always a purpose to the events that precede them. That aim often becomes the cause of the event, and as these are mainly aimed towards creating a better future outcome, we should be able to evaluate those from the past by the standards of today.
Also, by embracing presentism, we should be able to identify notable historical developments and contingencies that led to our current moral standards. When there are differences between moral standards at different periods, these might signify the developments that occurred in the course of history. For example, the abolition of slavery could indicate how people’s view towards basic human rights changed over time. As past standards are refined to produce present standards, such differences could allow us to learn more about the past and further develop our present standards to head towards the future.

We lose the merit of presentism when we abuse it to verify and glorify our superiority.
