Begin by reading the Introduction (do not read all the articles, just read the Introduction) to the “25 Songs that Matter Right Now” website.

Read it twice. The first time, read it, and circle any terms you do not know. Look up those terms and make a note of them either in the margins of the Introduction or in a separate document.

Read it again and for each paragraph write a one sentence summary of that paragraph in your own words.

Next put the sentences that are in your own words together in a way that is logical and reads smoothly. Add transitions if needed to smooth out the writing. You should have no more than one to three paragraphs. Each paragraph should have four to five sentences. Remember: the summary should stand on its own as a piece of writing so that the reader will not have to go back to the article to understand the main points.

Once you have your sentences compiled, think about the main overarching idea or claim that the writer is making.  Then, you are ready to write the first sentence of the summary. Remember: The first sentence of the summary should mention the author’s first and last name, the title of the article, when and where it appeared, and it should include the thesis (main overarching idea or claim) of the text you read in your own words.

Reread the Introduction one more time and then reread your summary.  Did you cover the main ideas? Did you avoid writing your opinion of what was said? Did you make sure you did not have more than one quote? Does your first sentence include all the required information? Does it include the main overarching idea of the article?

Once you are happy with your summary, add a works cited notation, and then copy and paste (do not attach it) the summary into the Practice Summary Discussion Forum.

Once you have completed the practice summary discussion activities, click on the link to go back to the “The Top 25 Songs that Matter Right Now” website and choose the article that you would like to summarize for a grade. Also, choose two back up articles in case your top choice is already assigned to someone else.
This is an interactive website. You can listen to short snippets of the songs if you want, or you can turn the music off and just read the essays that accompany each song.  For this assignment, we are most interested in the articles that accompany each song as you will be writing a summary of just one of the essays.  You do not have to read all of the essays, and you do not have to listen to any of the songs — unless you want to.
Trigger Warning: As mentioned before, the site is interactive, and so you can turn the music on and off as you wish. In the default mode, the music is turned off.  I mention this because some of the song lyrics may be offensive to some people. You do not have to listen to or read about those songs. You are to choose just one article about just one song for your summary assignment. There are many different genres of music represented, so scroll through the list and see if you can find a couple of songs you find interesting or familiar.

The purpose of writing summaries is to gain an understanding of a text so that you can respond to what you read or what you see. Now that you have a good understanding of the article about the song you chose, in this discussion forum, you will reflect on your interpretation of the song and its meaning. Begin by listening to the song that the article was about and thinking about your own reaction to the song.  Do you agree with what the author said about it? Why or why not? Be specific. Give specific examples to support your ideas.
If you were to make a list of 25 Songs that Matter Right now, are there any songs that are not on this list that you think should be? If so, what song or songs would you add? If possible, include a link to an online version of that song.
