Primarily, this thesis focuses on two vital areas of study, i.e., the strategies of growth and a comparative look at the internal and external measures of growth. More specifically, the aspects of operational efficiency, policy alignment, and an interactive comparative study of the effectiveness of internal and external measures of growth are of great interest. I will discuss these aspects concerning TPG Capital, one of the top American investment firms. To guide my thinking and research, I will focus on the following questions.
What is the operational efficiency effect of companies taken over by PE firms? I will address this question through a data-led analysis of the input and output of one of TPG Capital’s top investments, Airbnb. I will extract information regarding the input and output of this venture, determining the extent of growth achieved from the investment by TPG Capital. Most specifically, I will establish the operational efficiencies of the venture from the financial year ending 2015 to the financial year ending 2020 and find its average to establish the input-output relationship of TPG’s investment using the function y=f(x).
What is the TPG Capital investment effect on the goals and objectives of Airbnb? I establish an answer to this question by carrying out a comparative investigative study of the managerial priorities of Airbnb before and after 2014, the year during which TPG Capital initiated the investment relationship.
What is the annual return on investment for TPG Capital’s equity in Airbnb from the financial year ending 2015 to the financial year ending 2020? In essence, this question seeks to cut through the progress of the investment from an internal determinant perspective. As straightforward as it is, I will derive it through a statistical analysis of capital growth over the years of the investment.
What is the change in Airbnb’s competitive advantage over the years since TPG Capital’s investment in the venture in 2014? I will establish this by studying the trends in the industry, particularly the market positioning of Airbnb before and after the investment. I will conduct a survey of Airbnb’s positioning in the industry in the financial year 2013-2014 and 2018-2019. Ideally, the 2013-2014 financial year will be representative of the years before TPG Capital’s investment, while 2018-2019 will account for the post-investment period. I choose 2018-2019 because it comes four years after the investment, which is arguably enough time for the company to break even. Whereas 2019-2020 would be the ultimate and indeed the latest financial year to conduct this comparison, this financial year has been significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
